Yesterday's game at Fitch plus Monday's intrasquad game - Albert Almora, Chang-Yong Lim, Jose Rosario and Kyler Burke rehab updates.

Daury Torrez with 2 K and 0BB in 2 innings; he came in in relief. I'm not sure how these things work but when a guy doesn't start in an early season game like this, does it necessarily mean that they're using him as a reliever or are they piggy backing?

And refresh my memory, who are the DSL alumni here worth following besides Torrez and Martinez? I believe that Balenguert got a fairly decent bonus last year, and Malave the year before. Was Frandy DeLa Rosa our biggish international signing this past offseason?

What a shitty minor league season so far. I know we're still in SSS territory but wow, a nice week or two sure would be welcomed.

Sounds like Torrez was probably piggybacking and Rosario was the starter because he's rehabbing.

The big Latin American names to keep an eye out for besides Torrez are Frandy de la Rosa (yeah, he was the big 2012 signing), Jeffrey Baez, Carlos Penalver, Marck Malave, Luis Acosta, and pitchers Alexander Santana, Carlos Rodriguez, Eric Leal and Angel Mejias.

Based on what? Baez? Soler's been very good and Almora and Vizcaino have yet to play. Vogelbach and Shoulders have been very impressive. Anything from Vitters or Jackson is gravy as far as I'm concerned, and most of the other relevant prospects havn't done anything eye popping but have been pretty solid.

I fogot about Penalvar and Baez. Remember Leal, but didn't realise he was a big deal. Not familiar with Santana or Mejias. We're they around last year?

All the players I listed besides Penalver and possibly Baez will be in Mesa. Frandy de la Rosa could still be sent down to the DSL.

Going by our NSBB top 11:

Good: Soler, Vogelbach, Johnson

Disappointing: Baez, Jackson, Villanueva

Limited to no action: Almora, Vizcaino, Paniagua, Maples, Vitters

That's a whole lot of out of action. Was going to do 10, but looking at the talent, there seems to be a logical tier divider after Johnson.

Yes, based on Baez. And I guess we have different definitions of "very good" and "very impressive". Because i don't think Soler has been "very" good, or Vogelbach "very" impressive. I was also including Almora's broken hand and Vizcaino having yet to throw a pitch as reasons for the shitty season so far. Like I said, it's still a small sample size but it'd be nice to have a strong week or two to get excited about.

Yeah, the fact that guys that need to produce in the minors haven't played yet isn't a good thing.

Anything from Vitters and Jackson may be gravy, but they are considered by many top 10 prospects in this organization still, and the nothingness that has been their respective starts to the season is still disappointing. Makes it difficult to fool some team into taking them as part of a package deal.

Well, then you think wrong.

After back to back 0-3 games Soler's May OPS is now down to 1100. He's top 10 in the FSL right now overall. It's safe to say he's been very good.

Top 10 in OPS, top 7 in slugging in the biggest pitcher's league in the minors and he had an incredibly "strong" week last week that should have gotten everyone excited.

Maybe so. My point is there just hasn't been a whole lot to get excited about so far this year. Still a lot of season left, but I was hoping for more early.

It wasn't long ago that I was ready to toss Villanueva aside, but he's really picked things up the past week or 2. This early in the season 1 hot or cold week can have a drastic effect on the stat line.

It's hard not to worry anout Baez' K rates, but the only other one that really worries me is Paniaqua and his visa issues. Another one in the limited to no action category is Lake. I actually have him above Vitters and Jackson.

There's also several mid tier guys that have struggled such as Amaya, Hermandez, and Zych to name a few but we really don't have too much riding on those guys.

Is it pretty safe to assume that any DSL alumni that make it stateside are somewhat well regarded by the organization?

I feel you. This season has taken a lot of patience so far. But good things are coming. Namely, Almora and Vizcaino. Junior Lake should be returning to action fairly soon as well. Vitters and Jackson are back healthy. Paniagua will be allowed in the country at some point. Maples is finally in Kane County. Alberto Cabrera is having his best season as a starter since 2010. Good things are coming.

Yes. I believe it's gotten a bit easier for MLB teams to get visas for Latin American low level minor leaguers (Paniagua aside) but it still shows the organization feels relatively strongly in these specific guys. Obviously a guy like Acosta who showed nothing last year is probably in the US because of his 7-figure bonus.

I'd rather just go by whole-season stat lines than try to parse hot streaks and such. Too much room to insert bias when you do that.

For example, Villanueva had an OPS of .578 after 5/5, but is now up to .706.

In the 29 PAs that rose his OPS 128 points: 21% K, 3% BB, 1 HR, .579 BABIP. Is he really performing any better?

For his season totals, he doesn't have any blaring black holes like Baez's K rate. It's just a general pile of mediocrity, and mediocre AA stats is not a good sign for a hopeful MLB career.

This is why I'm not ready to cast aside Villanueva. Horrible start, hot the past 10 days or so. That's why I'm saying that a stat line can drastically change this time of year, so it's really around the half when things start to stabilize.

yeah his stats are mediocre after like a month and a half in his first crack at AA, at age 22. mineaswell just release him now.

Yes. Pointing out that a top 10 organizational prospect is having a mediocre season means that I'm advocating for his release.

"The game was halted by the coaches briefly in the top of the 6th so that Frandy de la Rosa could run around the bases three times, after he neglected to run out an infield pop up."
