Way early and SSS applies, but looking at RZR (precursor to UZR) and Starlin Castro is currently 3rd among shortstops in baseball.

one of the few times I'll c/p an arguello tweet and not be ridiculing something

quoting myself just because it's a super old thread and my bump post wound up at bottom of page.

hopefully the next davebot firmware update includes a fix to the self-aggrandizement "feature"

Heuristically Updating Minimization of Boasts, Lording, and Egotism, or H.U.M.B.L.E.

Full Castro quote: “I have a good talent to be a good shortstop. I don’t want to be no joke anymore."

God I love reading that.

Great stuff from Starlin Castro tonight. On his defense: "I don't want to be a joke anymore."

i like this a ton if only because i've always desperately wanted starlin to say stuff like this just to get the meatballs off his back. starlin is way too important and good to get run out of town. i personally don't care about the stuff he says or whether he looks sad after errors or whether he runs hard to first base on 100% of popups, but jesus christ do i ever care that he not get run out of here.

the "starlin finally matured and i bet it's cause we yelled at him so much when he was young" stuff from the meatballs both within and without the media will be annoying, but it's sadly necessary. good on starlin for heading in that direction.

i don't feel like theo and jed are the types to let the meatballs play any role in player transactions. but it would be good for him to get the meatballs on his side rather than having them turn against him and possibly hurt his performance by pressing.

Nothing angered me more the last few years than meatball comments about Starlin. I've unequivocally defended him since day one. Most hits of any SS since 2010, already has a 200 hit season....I know he's had defensive lapses but he was just a kid. He still IS a kid. He deserves to be here when we win. I know he's not a Theo/Jed guy but man do I hope he sticks around, I love him.

Maybe there’s something to not playing on a fifth-place team. Maddon and his coaches have also challenged Castro to incorporate more defensive work into his pregame routine and get into attack mode.

“(Be) aggressive on every ball,” Castro explained. “Sometimes, the errors that I’ve made (in the past have come) because I don’t have the confidence and stay back with the ball. Now, I’ll be aggressive and challenge the ball.”

[MORE: Cubs calling up Addison Russell marking another aggressive move]

Maddon is the fifth manager in six seasons for Castro, who doesn’t have to be such a daily focus now on a team with bigger names and hotter prospects.

There’s also something to be said for knowing who’s in charge. Whether or not Castro stays at shortstop and Russell transitions to second base, there are ways for the Cubs to make those pieces fit together.

“I feel different,” Castro said. “That’s the most important thing – the confidence that the manager gives to us. That’s the best way that you learn your talent is (coming together). Don’t think about anything. Just go out there and play. And we’re having fun.”

I love it. Can't wait to listen to Maddon on the Score tomorrow. So much to talk about.

I figured if I kept running Herrera out there they'd be too embarrassed to not call him up.

So who's he trying to get called up by running Schlitter out there?

Maybe this, maybe that...

Maybe he just turned 25 last month and started to mature a bit. I'd have hated having a troop of reporters following me around from ages 20-24 criticizing my every misstep. I can guarantee you I made a lot more questionable life-choice decisions than Starlin did.

We're talking about a guy who played a grand total of 57 games above the A-ball level before being called up. He had to learn some of the basic lessons on professionalism, that other players get a couple years of AA and AAA experience to hash out, while being the face of a franchise and making three All Star teams. All the attention on Bryant, Lester, Maddon, etc. have to feel like a huge burden off of his back.

I thought he was on the less dumb side of things when it came to local media, he's just more on the troll side.

He's always had trouble understanding Theo's "plan". It's one thing to disagree, but he either couldn't comprehend it or refused to.

Really? I didn't get the impression he didn't understand it. Len Kasper seems to have that idea as well, that critics of his plan didn't understand his plan. I do not understand that concept.

My problem has never been with people who didn't like or understand the plan.

My problem has been with people who wanted Jim Hendry gone and then got mad when Theo Epstein didn't run the team just like Jim Hendry.

I got 99 problems and 1 of them is with people who completely misunderstand or misrepresent what it was about Hendry's strategy that was a problem.

My problem is with people who think spending money is running the team just like Jim Hendry.
