Uhhhh, that seems like a LOT of weight to lose in less than 3 months (and over the holidays, too), especially for a guy that really didn't seem he needed to lose much at all. That worries me a bit.

It was purely head mass that was lost. He's all face now.

The general pattern for MLB players is that they'll be in peak shape to start the season, and they'll generally slowly ramp downwards in terms of overall fitness as the season progresses. Baseball related activities help keep this effect from being too dramatic, but the grind of the regular season means there's not a lot of extra lifting/cardio being done for fitness's sake, and 81 games on the road probably isn't great for eating habits if you aren't careful. Albert Pujols famously was a little flabby by the end of most seasons and then would turn himself back into a block of granite by the start of Spring Training.

In Rizzo's case, he's a big framed guy so he could pack on some weight during the season without raising much suspicion. I'm also reminded of Haren joking with him about being a 300 pounder the other day. I don't think it's huge news, but it's nice to see, especially if you see pictures of Rizzo with his family and are reminded that genetics aren't on his side.

He's always had kind of a borderline fat guy body. And he's like 6'4" or something.

I almost made a comment about wondering whether he's visited his oncologist lately but decided against it.

I doubt Kaplan put him on a scale. Seems like a harmless blandishment from a sports journalist who wants to ensure continued access to a player.

That's the thing; Italian dude from a family that loves to eat somehow drops 30 pounds over the holidays? Nigh impossible. Hopefully just Kaplan being an idiot.
