There's a book where some guy goes and sits in the bleachers for the whole 1987 season just called Bleachers. I don't remember loving it, but I was also an infant during that season, so a lot of the references were lost on me. There were some pretty good Andre Dawson stories though IIRC.

I graduated highschool in 87.

Damn, you're old.

Definitely. I was only in the 5th grade that year. \:D/

I remember my parents buying me an Andre's Army t-shirt. He was almost instantly one of my favorite Cubs. 1987 was the first full season that I followed baseball.

I know it's mostly my attitude/personality, but every year at this time I find myself hating some crummy fringe player just because holy balls I am tired of seeing them overrated. I can't wait for Matt Szczur's DFA so I quit having to hear about how he can be a useful 5th outfielder.

It's kinda cool to see our depth absorb what's actually been a bit of an annoying spring injury-wise. None of our stars are hurt (except Lester, whom I still quite nervous about, they are absolutely babying his shoulder for a reason), but a lot of our secondary guys are banged up. It doesn't really hurt us because there's so much redundancy, although one more SP going down starts to get into the problem zone.

I think I'm coming down on Bryant in LF, mostly because I really don't care for Coghlan. The last time he had a decent year, he followed it up with -1.4 fWAR over the next four. If you put Bryant in LF, Olt can be the weak link in the lineup and we have just disgusting power top to bottom.

I'm really excited by the possibility of Rizzo batting second.

Actually jokingly asked Jonah Keri on twitter if he would write a Cubs history book:

Jonah Keri @jonahkeri

@getmetheIV I emailed Theo and pitched the idea of a present-day look at the Cubs. He said thanks for the interest but no access granted.

I vote we banish this thread into Bolivia. A thread for every musing from now on. That's the [expletive] point of a Cubs Discussions subforum anyway.

purely a fantasy angle, but i'm curious what's in the 'stats package'

Michael Salfino ‏@MichaelSalfino

BTW, just got the stat package that charts Coghlan so highly. He should be drafts in all formats given that 2014 performance/starting job.

Michael Salfino @MichaelSalfino · Mar 26

I will break the news that after a spirited defense I have dropped Stubbs in F&F for Coghlan, who charts as 34th best hitter last year.

Sky ‏@Sky_Razzball Mar 26

@MichaelSalfino Lots of moving parts still but if they do move Bryant to the OF when he comes up, you know he's not in CF or RF.

Michael Salfino ‏@MichaelSalfino Mar 26

@Sky_Razzball true but they don't seem like they're doing that. Plus they use the stats I am citing and are smart.

Bruce Miles also contends that his two good years were the only years he was healthy, but that might just be convenient narrative

Sure but defense matters not in Fantasy

God I know, can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone talking about Matt szczur

What an Oklahoman way to put it.

I read the Keri Rays book and while not super-great, it definitely gave me some insight into what the Rays did and what Maddon is doing here.

Part of the voodoo magic as to why their pitchers didn't get hurt much is they hired a Pitch F/X guru (Josh Kalk) who uses that to study changes in release points

Also look for Maddon to do some managing that's different from "the book", and the meatball reporters will probably get pissed if it doesn't work.
