http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20141001/BLOGS04/141009987/athletico-ends-cubs-sponsorship

One of the most prevalent Chicago sports sponsors is departing Wrigley Field.

Oak Brook-based Athletico Ltd. ended its official sponsorship of the Chicago Cubs after seven years as the team's official physical therapy provider.

Athletico, the third-largest locally based physical therapy chain, also sponsors the Chicago Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls and White Sox, Fire and the Big Ten Conference. The firm twice renewed its deal with the Cubs but this year declined to extend past its expiration date of Sept. 30.

The Cubs "had put together a proposal that we took a long hard look at for several months," said Athletico President and Founder Mark Kaufman. "It didn't make sense based on the economics or what we're trying to accomplish with our sports marketing dollars."

The Cubs declined to comment on the company's departure but said the team would seek to fill the void with another physical therapy provider.

The timing of a longstanding partner splitting from the Cubs is intriguing given the barrage of new sponsorship assets the team is looking to sell at a renovated Wrigley Field and its momentum in building one of baseball's top farm systems.

The Cubs' sponsorship sales team and marketing agency W Partners have been looking to strike new deals to help fill more than 18,000 new square feet of signage in and around Wrigley Field that will be added during the ballpark renovation. The stadium currently has less than 7,800 square feet of signage.

Among the new assets the team is shopping are outfield signs, features on the park's planned new video boards, naming rights to each stadium entrance and a new plaza that will be built in the triangle property adjacent to the park.

And according to a report from the Sun-Times, Ramirez will work with Javier Baez on his hitting this season. Gordon Wittenmyer reported Manny Ramirez texted Baez and asked him to work with him this winter in South Florida. Baez accepted his invitation.

Nice! That will prepare him for playing in Miami when he's traded for Stanton

If the Front Office Really Wants a Player, the Money Will Be There

Haven't they said this pretty much every offseason? And if it was true, wouldn't that call into question the "The Cubs can't legally spend any more money due to debt service" narrative?

I'm not saying anything.

I don't really think those are incompatible statements given how little payroll was committed heading into the offseason. It's a pretty meaningless statement, but not a contradiction IMO.
