OK. Now I am pissed. [expletive] Zell. Who has the branding iron? I got the rope.

But, should we be pissed at Zell or Ricketts? Ricketts is the one who was naive enough to go through with it, right? When evidently no one else was. In a way, its kind of like people being pissed at Sori for taking 136 mill when it was us that gave it to him. To me, if Zell pulled a fast one, its on Ricketts for allowing it to happen. Especially since Zell had no interesr in keeping the Cubs for any length of time under any circumstance.

I can be pissed at both equally.

Zell followed the same business model he has with other fields: Suck up every last ounce of value then sell the husk to some sucker willing to buy under absurdly unfavorable terms.

Ricketts was his sucker.

I wonder if that's the only reason Ricketts was selected as the buyer for the team

Zell is just dirty. The only reason for me to be mad at Ricketts is this should have been made known a while ago. It would have made things a little more clear. Instead of getting our hopes up at becoming a juggernaut at the onset. We are still on a good path, but a lot of this frustration over spending could have at least been stymied with a clear representation of the situation.

Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but I thought he was the only guy willing to do it Zell's way. As the last guy standing, I figure Selig saw no issue or red flags with them. Plus, as an added bonus, he got a guy that wouldn't, even if he wanted to, spend like a maniac. Which definitely appealed to Selig.

Yeah, he was the only one willing to go with the Tribune's terms for the sale. It's looking more and more like that's because the other potential buyers were smart to be scared off by the Tribune's restrictions.

I mean, he's still not worse off owning the team than not owning it. If agreeing to those terms made the purchase a slam dunk for him, why wouldn't he do it?

Because every other potential buyer knew that it was a boondoggle. He could have negotiated the price downward or the restrictions away. But he didn't. Negotiating major business deals does not appear to be his strong suit.

Except that if the restrictions are gone, then he theoretically has much less of a chance of winning the bid.
