who the hell is kim jin-yeong?

Cubs pitching prospect that will probably be dropped from my lineup. I think he signed for $1.8 M or something around there, a few years back.

end of exemptions.

I thought it was 100 abs

Players will be cap-exempt for their first three years. A year is a season in which a player has 50 or more plate appearances, 5 pitching starts, or 10 total appearances.

Wait, you made that trade with hbc for 2 guys he wasn't going to keep, you gave up the best SS and a top 5 3b (clearly the two best players in the deal), you only made the deal to get under the cap when it turns out you were wrong about your backup SS being exempt, and now you end up with no SS and just 9 keepers?

That was a pretty brutal last-minute trade before I knew all of that. I sure hope hbc didn't know you were banking on Desmond being exempt bc that would be really underhanded.

Mauer actually had 455 but that doesn't change your points.

But Niese isn't exempt. He had 5 starts in 09 and much more than 5 each of the last 3 years.

No, I did not know.

The "two guys he wasn't going to keep" argument is stupid. That's the only reason any of these offseason trades are made because we're not going to keep them. Tim gave me a 2nd round pick and a potentially elite pitcher with 2 exemption years left for 2 guys I wasn't going to be able to keep. And it's not like I was going to be able draft Cueto anyway without having a 1st round pick. As pitching thin as this draft is, Cueto might not have lasted past #1, considering he would have been 2nd for projected points among SPs available by 1.5 points to RA Dickey. Cueto was the 7th highest scoring pitcher last year and was 33rd the year before despite only 156 innings (everyone ahead of him save for Vogelsong had at least 33 more innings pitched). He outscored both Tulo and Headley each of the last 2 years, so I'd argue that I gave up "clearly the best 2 players in the deal" is dead wrong also.

As for Tulowitzki, he hasn't been the best SS in 3 years. Has missed at least 40 games in 3 of the last 5 seasons, and 1 other he missed 20 games. And I thought I had a SS in place. I do have a 3B in place which made Headley expendable. Plus, I'm not convinced he can repeat his numbers even with the fences moved in at Petco. If I didn't make the trade I would have had to drop either Sandoval or Tulo.

Hey whatever floats your boat. But I didn't say the two guys that will score the most points. I said the two best players. SP score more in this league, so saying the SP will put up more points than a SS and 3B is a very low bar. Tulo and Headley were the best SS and 3B that would have been available. Cueto may have been among the top projected SP available, but he was in a group with a few other SP. The drop from Cueto to the next guy is almost meaningless - not true for Tulo and Headley.

I'm not sure what the point is, I guess. It just feels odd, I think, for some of the rest of the league when you made a trade to put yourself just barely over the limit on the deadline and then had to trade away two top 5 guys at their positions in an almost literally last second deal to bail out HBC b/c you had to dump points to get back under the limit again. Pretty huge windfall for HBC.

Sorry, for whatever reason I thought 5 starts as below the limit. I think that 10 starts is the minor league cap.

Niese has been dropped.

Karma strikes back - Gamel is out for the year, so Chuck essentially wasted a keeper spot, too.
