If you're going to trade a prospect like Wil Myers you have to get a better player than James Shields. I realize Shields is a good pitcher but come on.

They should've gotten a legitimate ace like Price for Myers.

Not sure if it's sarcasm, but they should have at least used him as the headliner for a guy like Price.

Not at all, I'm in complete agreement with you. It was a poor return for Myers; now we're hearing names like Odorizzi included too? Yeesh.

Maybe not Price, but that package should have been good for Shields and Hellickson.

I can't recall the last time I've seen a trade this lopsided. KC just got absolutely reamed for James Shields.

Rob Neyer agrees:

My quick take: This is the worst trade in MLB history unless Wade Davis becomes a good starter, in which case it's only the second worst.

Final trade tally: James Shields, Wade Davis and PTBNL for Wil Myers, Jake Odorizzi, Mike Montgomery and Patrick Leonard.

Royals probably end up on the short end of this trade, but if their owner is actually going to be as stingy as he's been acting lately, then they probably need to go for it now when they feel like they're just a starting pitcher away. Of course it all hinges on the young position players making the improvements this year that they are hoping for. For all the years they've put into building a competitor it sucks that they still won't be the favorite going into this season.

Of course Myers could be always be a bust...

EDIT: But why in the world did they tender Hochevar a $4MM+ contract?

Even if they need to go for it now, there's just no way this is the best pitching they could get for Myers.

@jazayerli: We were well-positioned to dominate the AL Central from 2014 to 2017. But someone needs to keep his job in 2013. #MoralHazard

From 2007 through 2009, the Braves did not finish 1st or 2nd in the NL East once. In 2008 they lost 90 games.

Maybe I truely don't know what I'm talking about, but I maintain my stance that Amaro was given a win now team, and his job is to win. Now. When the time comes to break down this particular Phillies team, then we'll see what he's made of as a GM.

He should be fired right now. Any owner who keeps a GM who makes that trade deserves whatever they get.

I agree. Now that I see the rest of the trade... Wow. I just. Couldn't Dayton Moore have convinced Glass that the money saved on team control for Myers and Odirizzi and Montgomery was worth paying a FA pitcher like Dempster? I'm in shock right now.

Could we really not have gotten just Odorizzi for Garza right now? If they're going to give up all that for Shields you'd have to think it was a possibility right?
