Sources: #Angels receive Brandon Sisk in Ervin Santana trade.

Angels are paying some money in the deal. No clue why they didn't just release him, since Sisk is basically a nothing return.

Was there a buyout amount?

According to a few on Twitter, Angels likely just kicking in buyout money of a mill. So, the Royals, who came out recently saying they have 20 mill to spend on pitching thisvoffseason, just spent 13 on Santana and probably 3 on Volstad. Before FA can even sign with other teams. Phenomenal.

Yeah he had a terrible 2012, but his track record isn't nearly that bad.

Plus, the $13m salary for 2013 may look much more palatable after this winter. Every team has cash to burn.

This is funny. I can't believe a team was actually willing to do this.

But this is excellent news for the Cubs. I was thinking of Shaun Marcum specifically, a potential Cubs target who is from KC, could pick the Royals over a few teams if the offer is close. That seems unlikely now with the payments to Santana and Volstad.

Why should this guy be an NRI after 1 bad season? Some team was going to sign him for $7m+ if his option wasn't picked up. The Royals probably expect substantial inflation in salaries this offseason. Plus where else are the Royals going to get pitching? Everyone needs it.

As I said yesterday Dayton Moore said the Royals are trying to get "2 or 3 starting pitchers." The owner said at the end of the year that he was willing to operate at a loss to go out and get pitching. They will sign one free agent, point to Duffy returning, and point to Volstad and Santana and say that the players underperformed. Sorry, fans. We don't have a crystal ball.

I don't know about anything else, but I'd have happily sent the Angels $1MM+one of our junk relief prospect for Santana.

Why? We could do much better things with $13M.

Are you making an unrelated point or do you have the direction of the payment reversed?

Posted
Yeah, I thought I read that KC was only sending the Angels $1MM. Didn't realize that Santana's option was that much either. $12MM is a lot for Ervin Santana when you're the Kansas City Royals. I'd still take the one year $15MM risk on Haren though.

Agreed. But I don't want to hate on the idea too hard because it'd be better than ending the offseason with our two new SPs being like Carlos Villanueva and someone else like that.

I guess eating a really expensive Kobe Beef burger that's gone bad is technically better than eating the the chewed up Whopper you found in the trashcan.
