I don't agree with that "sufficient distance" explanation.

 

In an extreme example, what if the defender shoves a receiver to the ground and then the ball is tipped from a "sufficient distance"? The receiver is still lying on the ground with no chance to catch the ball.

Well, won a fantasy game with that FG. But I was tied so an extra point would have been just as good.
