Lockhart has six consecutive multi-hit games, is momentarily hitting .333, and his OBP must be up near .400. Has only 4 K's in 60+ AB's I think. 6BB/4K. Vogelbach has 10K, so he's looking like a hitter who happens to have real power, rather than the prototype high-K slugger.

vogelbach adds a double. why is he still in arizona?

After his struggles in EXST, I'm fine with it, for now. But I'd like to see him bypass Boise and get to Peoria, within a month. I think it's possible anyway.

I really don't see a rush for that. He's young. I'm fine with him simply going to Boise, which I think he should do at some point this summer. Let Vogelbach/Candelario and Co. develop together. No rush, IMO.

I'd rather see Stephen Bruno go up to Peoria to be a 2nd/SS/3rd guy, and kick Geiger to part time 1st/part time corner OF/part time 3rd.

Why would you want to move Geiger off of 3rd for someone like Stephen Bruno?

Because Geiger is definitely not going to stick at 3B?

Definitely not based on what I saw last night. Two of the really good plays Baez made were because Geiger misplayed or didn't get to balls.

Arizona Phil on yesterday's AZL game: http://www.thecubreporter.com/2012/07/12/vogelbomb-and-vogeldub-lead-cubs-victory

  • Dan Vogelbach's big game
  • Lendy Castillo's good start and info on how long he needs to stay in the bigs for the rest of the season given his Rule 5 status
  • Trey Lang and Corbin Hoffner's pro debuts
  • Information on NDFA David Henrie, who apparently got a sizable bonus last year

He looked very good tonight (in fact it's hard to believe he even had an injury...), throwing a 94 MPH fastball and a plus-slider while allowing two baserunners (a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch in the top of the 1st, and a bloop single that fell in front of RF Garrett Schlecht in the 2nd) but no runs in two innings of work (34 pitches - 24 strikes). He struck out one with a 4/1 GO/FO.

Rather, Henrie was a JUCO player (Trinidad State JC) who was "bird-dogged" by the Cubs for two months last summer while he pitched for the Arvada Colts in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League (a collegiate "wood bat" league), and then he signed at the August 15th deadline, receiving a substantial bonus (rare for a NDFA).

Baez isn't sticking at SS. Should we move him too?

Baez will eventually become too big for SS, Geiger is physically not able to field third base like a professional should(.884 fielding percentage, stiff movements, lack of range). There's a difference. We wouldn't put Vogelbach at 2B for a season just to prove that he can't handle it, similarly there's nothing wrong with being honest about Geiger not being able to handle an infield position that isn't 1B.

While there's little doubt he will eventually be moved, he's barely played 100 professional games, and he's only played 28 this year. I think it would be worthwhile to let him try 3B for at least a full season, if nothing more than to be able to get into a normal routine and not have to learn new positions in the middle of the year.

He's not going to stick, so I don't see any reason to keep him there unless they need somebody to play the spot at whatever level he happens to be at.

Unless Baez does get a lot bigger, I don't see any reason he can't stick at SS. He appears to have very good instincts, soft hands, and a rocket arm. I'm basing this on seeing him just one time, but he made several plays that would lead me to believe he can handle the position long term.

I would concur.

But I too, saw him just once, etc.....

Largely as others stated - the chances of Geiger sticking at 3rd were always slim. Bruno is more of a MI prospect, but he has manned third (and was UVA's 3rd baseman last year). I'm not saying you don't give Geiger any time at 3rd, but right now, it seems like a really slim chance that he sticks there, so it wouldn't be the worst thing to see if he can handle corner OF.

All that said, the main thing with Geiger is whether or not his bat can produce. Defense was never going to be his forte, to say the least.
