I understand the Dodgers' reasoning this out honestly. Yes, Gould is TOO much value to give up for Carlos Lee. No question. But, there aren't very many sellers right now. Abreu is playing solidly for them in LF, Kemp will be back after the break, Ethier will be back soon, same with Mark Ellis. They're committed to Dee Gordon for the year, AJ Ellis has been ridiculously good, so it leaves 1B and 3B where you can try and upgrade. With most teams not in sell mode yet, it may have very well come down to Lee or LaHair. If I'm the Dodgers, I probably trust Lee more going forward than LaHair, so you try and trade for him first. Plus, I don't care what anyone else says, we have no clue what Theo and Jed may be asking for LaHair right now. Would I take Garrett Gould for LaHair? Hell yes. But, either the Dodgers like Lee more for half a year and paying out 9 mill or so as well, or the Cubs are asking for too much for a guy who's controllable for the following 5 seasons. My guess is the Dodgers think Lee is the better fit, but I'm hoping like hell he turns down the trade, because we may be their fallback option.

The Dodgers are desperate as hell right now, see Gould probably as a guy who never actually gets a shot with them, and see him as movable, because of that. They've got Kershaw, Billingsley, Rubby, and Lee on their future rotation list most likely,(once Lilly, Harang, and Capuano are gone) with a big FA likely. Carlos turning them down could very well net us an excellent pitching prospect or two.

Please say No Carlos! I'll gladly take Gould for Dempster/LaHair.

Time to sign up for a bunch of Houston related emails & twitter accounts and bombard Lee with requests to finish his career in Houston!

If that's the going rate for Lee, Dempster's netting more than that, on his own. Maybe Eovaldi isn't that unrealistic, one you look at their future and how he may not really figure into it. But they're stuck. If Lee backs out, we may get lucky on LaHair one day next week, because they've got no other options. If LaHair has a good weekend and Lee doesn't happen? All bets are off with Ned, as far as I'm concerned.

It all depends on who's in the market for what and what they have to offer. Du to the limited amount of offensive players potentially available, Lee could fetch a premium, and hopefully Soriano can too. If Dempster were active now, we could likely get a lot more for them than we will closer to the deadline, when Greinke, Marcum, McCarthy, and maybe even Hamels could be available. Garza's the one who could bring back the most due to the extra year of team control, which none of the others have.

Everything agreed upon. Just waiting on Lee's decision.

According to Scott Miller of CBS Sports, the Dodgers and Astros have agreed to a trade for Carlos Lee, pending Lee's approval to waive his no-trade clause.

The Dodgers would reportedly take on the rest of Lee's $18.5 million salary for 2012 and send back minor league right-hander Garrett Gould in the deal. Lee has adamantly told the Astros that he will not waive his no-trade clause, but the lure of playing for a contending team in Los Angeles might change that.

I really hope that he blocks it. A lot of contenders are looking hard for pitching, but not so much offense. This isn't to say that nobody would have interest in Soriano, but not enough so to give up a top prospect like Gould. There have been reports that we'd be willing to eat as much of Soriano's contract as needed to move him, so it's hard to tell if A. Even with virtually his entire salary covered, he has less value than Lee B. The Astros simply beat our guys to the punch, C. our guys are not willing to eat as much salary as we've heard.

On the plus side, if the deal really was all that close, or if he had agreed to it, he would have been lifted from the game by now.

You realize Carlos Lee will be playing 1B, not LF, for the Dodgers, right? It's not a matter of getting beat to the punch on Soriano at all. The Dodgers just got Abreu, he's putting up a .750 OPS for them, Kemp is due back right after the ASG, and Ethier is back any day. They ARE NOT looking for an OF, it's a matter of Lee turning them down, LaHair, not Soriano, and not both, becomes a legit option. That's how we can capitalize here. Has zero to do with Soriano.

True. That being the case, if this did fall through I could see them checking in on LaHair, but certainly not for a top 10 guy. Unless the Twins decide to move Morneau or Willingham, there really arent many non contenders with offense to spare. Milwaukee could shop Hart but that's really it.

carlos lee is trash.

Seriously. After glancing at his numbers, why the hell would they want to do this deal?

My guess is they think he's due to pick it up offensively somewhat. Plus, he's got a long track record. Probably a safer bet than LaHair for them.

I'm sure moving to Dodger Stadium will really help his numbers. Not to mention all the other great hitter's parks in the NL West such as Petco and AT&T.

I thought I saw on the ESPN scroll earlier today that Lee said he would not waive his no trade clause. Edited by 23sharks

Soriano has two years left on his deal, is obviously streaky as hell, and his knees may scare the [expletive] out of other teams. He may not even be able to pass a physical, for all we know. We may be stuck with him and if he's playing decently at this time next year, may be able to save a few mill at that point. I figure the only teams that MAY have any interest in him this year are Tampa, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh possibly. Oakland, if they keep hovering within 4-5 games of the wildcard. My guess is if he gets dealt this season, it's in August.

Olney said that earlier, but Lee said he's going to talk it over with his wife and hopefully decide by tomorrow.

Yeah, same here. He hasn't done much over the last 2 and a half seasons. Being that he's 36, I think it's safe to assume his best days are past and he's on the downside of his career.

LaHair would be a better option for them.

I honestly don't get why the Dodgers wouldn't offer Derrek Lee a minimum deal first to see if he has anything left, before exploring the trade market in July. Even giving up Gould for Lee seems ... eh.

The Dodgers are a huge market team with a rabid fan base who had really been losing patience, especially with the McCourt BS. They weren't expecting to be as good as they were early on, and when they were all of the sudden the fans stopped grumbling. Once they lost Kemp, things went down hill in a hurry, and they were probably thinking we better get the smokescreen back up and do whatever we can to keep in the race. Remember, when it comes to the more casual fans, which make up a pretty big percentage of every fan base, unless we're talking about a phenom they don't know who the hell most of their prospects are, but a big name like Carlos Lee gives off the impression that they're trying to win. Should a big league GM and front office think this way? Absolutely not, but judging by some of the desperation trades you see in the summer by fringe contenders, clearly some do.

supposedly, they thought it'd take too long to get Lee in shape and up to the majors.

Lee's in the lineup today, but will make decision tonight...Please stay in Houston!!

Carlos Lee is in the Astros' lineup Sunday and says he has yet to make a decision on whether to accept a trade to the Dodgers.

The fact that he's in the lineup would seem to indicate he's likely staying with the 'Stros, but he'll likely officially make a decision later Sunday. The Dodgers have a deal in place to acquire the veteran first baseman/outfielder, but Lee might prefer to stay close to his ranch in Texas rather than join a contender.

It's really infuriating that the Lees and the Thomes are coveted like they are, however Soriano is considered borderline worthless.

contract.

With us eating 90% of his contract, the contract shouldn't be a problem.

@Buster_ESPN: As of now, sources say Carlos Lee hadn't changed his mind from Sat. and won't agree to deal. Source: "It's probably not going to work out.

Time to move on. If they were willing to give up a top prospect for a washed up 35 year old, imagine what we can get for an All Star.
