Calgary signs Dennis Wideman to a contract, 5.25 per. Two thoughts. One, the Keith/Seabrook deals look amazing. Second, this puts the Suter market, based on Wideman's deal, at roughly 12 million a year.

I was hoping the Wings would make a run at Wideman if they do not get Suter. I was thinking more like 3.8 though. Calgary is just plan stupid.

Wideman is awful and no one should actively want him. Even as a backup plan. One of Bouwmeester or Giordano has to be available now. They have so much money tied up in awful or aging players. What a trainwreck that organization is. They'll fight valiantly for 8th spot, wind up in 10th, and have another mediocre first rounder. They're still two years ago from being completely awful and I don't see a way out for them in either direction. Feaster flatly refuses to make long term moves.

I think everyone realizes how ridiculous this signing is and it won't have too much of an effect on the market.

Wideman also has a full NMC. Horrendous.

That's not a bad thought. Hopefully you're right about that.

Lots of good will and optimism coming from the NHL and NHLPA yesterday about the oncoming CBA negotiations. Hopefully that continues. Donald Fehr said that the NHLPA is willing to play after the 9/15 deadline as long as negotiations continue to be fruitful.

I just can't imagine that the league and PA will allow this to get to a lockout. The league is finally making progress in terms of attendance, TV ratings and revenue. Players and owners are making more money than ever before. A lockout could put it below soccer.

Flyers offer Weber 14 year, 100 million + contract!

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/shea-weber-inks-14-offer-sheet-philadelphia-flyers-052925384--nhl.html

Sort of undermines the "cry poverty" stance of the owners.

I keep hearing that if the new CBA lowers the salary cap then all of these contracts will be scaled back like in 2005. Just because that happened then does not mean the players are going to agree to that this time around. I think the owners are not is nearly as strong of a position as they were in 2004. There is no way they can afford any kind of an extended shut down. Don Fehr is a master at exploiting this. And as you stated, the owners are going to look bad crying poor and giving contracts like this....or 3.5 mill a yr to players like Oduya and Kyle Quincey.

A lot of the money- maybe $68 million- is supposed to be signing bonuses over the first few years starting with $13 mil in season 1. That money can't be scaled back, at least that's the speculation based on existing rules.

No doubt! They sent the players a crazy CBA proposal, with one of the key items being 5 year max contracts, and then you have these owners offering up 14 year deals. The problem is the owners need to be saved from themselves! LOL.

If this isn't trying to circumvent the cap, I don't know what is!!! The league said they were gonna crack deal on contracts like this.....guess that isn't going to happen.

BTW, love your login name. Biittner was actually my favorite player as a kid. LOL.

That one has to go in the auto correct HOF for it's awesomeness. Even your computer thinks the owners are smoking crack.

rick nash to the rangers

Supposedly the Wings offered quite a bit more, but Howson would have nothing to do with trading Nash in the division. Of course this is all supposedly.

Howson is crazy but the reports of who the Wings were offering were meant to be "either" instead of "and", meaning that the wings package wasn't as good as people thought.

That's what she said.

They pretty much had to. Hard to sell tickets when you let both of your stud defensemen go in one offseason. He will likely be traded after this season I'd bet. Thinking he's going to bitch his way out of town

Yeah I didn't realize he was wanting out of town. Not that I blame him.

i don't think he will. you don't sign an offer sheet knowing you could very well be stuck in the city you're already in. he may get traded, simply b/c nashville may struggle to pay the enormous contract. i don't think he'll weasel his way out a la carter or nash though.

Khakis and a polo to a wedding? Classing the place up there, Dustin... FFS

Every wedding I go to those people arrive dressed down 2-3 levels from the rest of the guests.

And by those people I mean fat people. They don't suit up like the rest of the population.
