Can we put Rizzo in the conversation for NL ROY yet?

Who else is in the team photo? I'm probably missing someone obvious... all I can think of is Harper. Any pitchers in the conversation?

Does Altuve still have rookie standing with the 57 games (and 221 AB) he played last year?

I'm not even sure if Rizzo is eligible. Altuve definitely is not. If Rizzo is eligible, Harper and Miley would seem to be the main competition.

also ineligible by way of it has already been decided that trout and harper are going to win because it is a good story for the crazy young guys to win together and usher in the new generation or w/e

I remembered looking into it at around the time of the callup and I believe he is.

Rizzo’s 128 at-bats for the San Diego Padres last season falls three short of putting him beyond rookie status. And his 44 days on the Padres’ roster during the 25-man limit? Two short.

Trout actually almost missed being eligible but MLB made an exception for him.

The days on the 25 man roster only include days during the 25-man roster limit, which excludes anything after Sept. 1, when rosters expand. Rizzo was up from around June 9 to July 21 (not sure the exact date he was called up but those are the first and last days that he played), which is 43 days. He was then sent down and the rest of his time with the Padres was in September.

So it looks like he is eligible.

You're right. Forgot to factor that in. My mistake.

it's never too early to look at per-162 game splits!

right now, he's playing at a 42 HR, 72 K pace

(last year it was a 3 HR, 152 K pace)

can we all send a fruit basket or something to whoever it was that lowered his hands?

It's pretty amazing. I'm sure it won't stay as drastic but I'm glad he has had so much success early on. It has to have significantly cooled any concerns he might've had about his ability to perform after last year.

Len talked about this during a game. Rizzo told him he was just messing around in the cage with different stances and it felt good to him. So send your fruit to Rizzo.

It looks like a whiffle ball stance. Which makes it more amazing.

Don't need to send it. He'll take whatever he wants.

The first thing I thought of when I saw it was Eric Davis, whose stance was one of my favorites to imitate when I was tween.

it always seems like there is no way you could generate any kind of power with how low his hands are. is that wrist strength? forearms? i know nothing about baseball. it seems like he barely even pulls the bat back.

He's definitely pulling back when the pitch comes. As his foot goes up, the hands go back. Looks like it helps with his timing.

There is talk of Trout pulling a freddy Lynn and winning ROY and MVP.

It's hard to argue his stats aren't legit or that he would win because of it being a good story.

He does lead the AL in batting average, runs, stolen bases. He is 2nd in slugging, triples and OPS. He is third in ob% and running away with all the WAR catagories.

He is also on a pace to hit 30+ hrs, drive in 100, steal 60 bases, and score 150 runs.

Harper's stats are good (for a rook) but not the category of Rizzo's should he continue at close to his pace. The amazing part of Harper is that he is 19, and is in his 2nd season of any pro ball. He has played a total of 130 minor league games and is barely 2 years past his high school classes graduation date (he graduated early). When you think of Rizzo's struggles last year and the adjustments he had to make, Harper's success is pretty amazing.

That being said if Rizzo finishes around .300, and with a 30hr/100 rbi pace, it would be sad to see him lose out to a .260/ 20 hr/65 rbi season.
