Whoofda, if Hoyer/Theo do not think they are compensated by the trading partner equitably then they can keep Dempster. In the offseason they can offer him a 1 year contract that he will likely decline and they can get a supplemental 1st round pick for him. Said pick may turn out to be better than whoever the trading partner was willing to give. That will be up to Hoyer/Theo to decide.

Slow down a little.

The new CBA apparently killed that scenario. Now teams lose the pool of money that comes with the first round pick in signing guys who have gotten qualifying offers, meaning a team that signed Demp would have far less money to spend in the draft than they otherwise would. That likely keeps teams from signing him and keeps us from getting a pick for him.

So if he declines the trade to Atlanta, our options most likely become take whatever LA offers us or have Dempster on the team next year on a 1-year deal. Neither is very appealing.

If Cubs are forced to deal Demp to Dodgers for scraps, they should start him twice more and let him throw 9 innings, save some taxation on the bullpen and deal him at 11:59 on July 31st.

A very plausible scenario to this mess, could be that Atlanta was a backup plan and all parties were aware. Waiting to see if Dodgers upped their offer. It got out and now it appears any potential leverage has been lost.

Dempster seems like he would enjoy being the center of attention for a few days while everyone waits with baited breath to see if he will accept the trade.

how else is he supposed to book an off-season standup tour

And Dempster's 35, what are the odds he'll be leading the league again in ERA next year? Odds are he won't be worth nearly as much next year as this year. This sucks.

So you're upset that Dempster is having a good year this year?

No, he's upset that Dempster is having the best season of his career right now and his value is as high as it's going to get, and he's waffling on the trade and driving his value down with every passing day. Frankly, I'm pissed aobut that too.

I can't help wondering if the Cubs FO knew all along that Demp would only accept a trade to LA and were simply playing other suitors for leverage. To go a bit further, if Atlanta suspected as much, they could've designed this leak to ascertain the truth.

And the Nationals were waiting in the grassy knoll.

Good God. Dempster will be traded. Maybe it will be to LA for Gould tomorrow. Maybe it will be for Delgado this weekend. Maybe it will be to another team all together for a guy we woudln't even think of Tuesday afternoon. When August 1st rolls around, Ryan Dempster will not be a Cub, and the general population will be satisfied with the return. That's why we put together the front office that we did.

Source says there are ways for #Dodgers to get Ryan Dempster from #Cubs without surrendering Zach Lee.

Brewers broadcast repeatedly showing Braves special assistant Jim Fregosi in Philly. Greinke on the hill and has touched 95.

Mark Bowman, generally considered the guy who broke this yesterday, dropped another nugget in an article this afternoon, mentioning we were getting at least one other minor leaguer in the deal.

i'm enjoying the blind loyalty that casto's spray chart has for dempster in this thread.

sounds to me like dempster was all geared up for la, then had his feelingd hurt when the atlanta news broke. now he's pouting and stomping his feet to try and regain some power. i bet this still happens. if not, [expletive] ryan dempster. thanks for the 7 walks and all the cringe worthy impressions.

If the Cubs really liked Zach Lee, it would be an issue...

WTF is that supposed to mean? Are they trading him somewhere else? Are they not willing to include him in a trade and that's the only guy we will take? Gammons is horse [expletive]
