I'm trying to remember, but I don't think Samardzija hung a single slider today. He missed in the dirt with some, but no hangers, which is amazing consistency for him.

"It all started my freshman year. I was new on the baseball team. I showed up, didn't know anyone. I was a talking to (former Irish pitcher Chris) Niesel, and out of nowhere they called me `Shark' because they said I looked like the shark on Finding Nemo. It started during a game while I was pitching and they yelled at me from the dugout. Then Coach (Paul) Mainieri picked it up and it just snowballed from there. I guess I look like a shark."

I liked this starting staff coming in and they are pitching well. Hope it continues.

Such a great game. Shark looked fantastic. If he pans out and becomes a piece in the rotation going forward, that will be so beneficial.

i've been pretty critical of samardzija, but sounds like his stuff was awesome, and most importantly he had good command. hopefully he keeps it up - he's still cheap enough (in arbitration) to be quite a bargain if he can turn into a #2/3 type pitcher.

That he did. Actually hoping he tightens that pitch up over the course of the year as he throws more and gets a better feel for the pitch.
