So, if you haven't been paying attention, the Reds had been stretching Chapman out to give him a run as a starter. And not that ST stats should count for much, but he was pretty much dominant. 4 starts, 17 IP, 1.12 WHIP, 2.12 ERA, 18K and 2BB.

Reds manager Dusty Baker announced Monday that pitcher Aroldis Chapman is headed back to the bullpen after auditioning as a starter this spring. "He's a starter, a very good starter. But Billy Bray isn't ready to be late-inning lefty right now," Baker said. This news means Mike Leake and Homer Bailey will round out the Reds' rotation.

(Updated 04/02/12)

Because we all know a very good starter belongs in the bullpen in favor of trash.

“He’s going to be a starter, a very good starter,” Baker said. “He’s on board with with it. He anticipated it. He’s a smart kid. He said he thought as much because he lost (Nick) Masset and (Ryan) Madson. Billy Bray isn’t as sharp. He’s not a candidate to be a late-inning lefty guy.

“It was a process of elimination.”

The same Billy Bray, BTW, who in 2011 held LHB to .180/.265/.292 and in 2010 held them to .106/.208/.298.

My fantasy team says [expletive] you, Dusty.

I love Dusty now that he manages a rival.

Hard to buy hell be there for long or that he's a 200 inning guy right now. No need to rush. Sorry to hear about your fantasy prospects.

Even if he doesn't throw 200 innings, he's far more valuable as a starter while throwing 130-150 innings as opposed to being a "late inning lefty". That suggests set up or 7th inning guy.

God Dusty is stupid.

Huh, I thought Chapman was too much of an injury risk to be considered a starter.

Anyone know what kind of velocity he had while being stretched out this spring? I guess if he's sitting 91-94 and touching 97 instead of 102, he might be ok.

Yeah see these guys are still human so let's actually think this out:

He threw 50 innings last year. Triple his workload in a new role and then what? What happens when he hits his limit and they're still in the hunt? Do they let Dusty ride him? Do they move him to the pen?

Chapman will start when the time comes...the guy is a special talent and a major investment for them...I think they're doing alright handling him, 18 ST innings be damned.

By that standard how is he ever going to get stretched out? Having him work on it during the offseason and spring training, followed by and increase during the season won't push him too hard.

And you do realize 130-150 innings is only about 6 innings per week (about one start). Not a lot for a starter. He'd be far more valuable to them as a long relief/swing starter if they don't want to get him too many innings yet.

How often are you using a long relief/split starter in April? He should learn to be more efficient as a pitcher, and the bullpen is a good place to learn that.

what? no. the bullpen is where you learn to throw as hard as you can every pitch since you're only going to be out there for an inning.

O really? Earl Weaver and Johan Santana say you can learn to pith with your fastball and be more aggressive with your off speed. The fact that the fastball sees a boost in velocity is just part of what throwing less innings per appearance allows.

That's a ridiculous claim anyway...a good reliever is still a pitcher, not some renegade out there throwing as hard as possible. He's still got to learn to locate and command his fastball, his slider is certainly not FULLY developed....change up....I bet he starts at some point this season anyway. If not, then next year it is...when he's all of what...25?

Sucks for fantasy GMs out there.

That's actually a surprisingly prudent move that I'd never expect him to make. Dude has a reverse platoon split. Granted, it's only 150 AB vs lefties, but Dusty would run out Mike Remlinger like he was a loogy.

I don't follow Dusty and the Reds that much. I do understand that Heisey has not hit lefties that well. But, I thought Dusty has been reluctant to play Heisey the last couple of years. I can see why a fan may already be getting is dander up over starting Ludwig on opening day. Just what I know from history, I would guess that Dusty will give Ludwig at least 100+ more abs than he should get over Heisey.

So, apparently Dusty has a sign in his office that says the following

The two most important things in life are good friends and a strong bullpen.

- Bob Lemon

...Olney said that when he asked Dusty about it, Dusty said, "...and not necessarily in that order."

Then after Chapman dominated in his appearance, Dusty goes, "SEE! That's why he's in the bullpen!"

You can't make this [expletive] up.

He's also making Devin Mesoraco the primary backup to Ryan Hanigan, it would seem

Yes. Bench your #1 prospect instead of giving him AB's in the minors, Dusty. That sounds about par for the course. Although you can put some blame on Jocketty for that, too.
