I really want to like Campana, but he really needs to be a defender of Sam Fuld caliber to have a ton of value, and he's just not that guy defensively.

Ugh. Why would you want to do that?

Because he's fun to watch, he just had an easy bunt groundout that looked like he was Sonic after one of those Turbo boosts.

Szczur is going to have to be a Cub for 10 years before I call him Cesear instead of Zurr

That's the first time I've really seen caesar hit. He really does have sort of a goofy looking swing.

Yeah, am I the only one here who JUST learned that it's pronounced "Ceasar"?

I still really like him as a 5th outfielder longterm. His speed alone should make him a valuable member of the team until he starts getting expensive.

No. I always thought it was probably sue-zer.

How fast did Corpas or Parker look?

Somebody has to be the 12th man, and I have no idea who that's going to be at present. Some guy I hardly think about might get that job.

Corpas looked lacking in the velo department. Parker looked like he was throwing fairly hard (and pretty good overall).

I always assumed it was [shzuhr] or something

so many bad spellings of Caesar in this thread. :-)

Just some random spring training thoughts.

The only really vaguely important thing that has happened so far is that DeJesus is announced as the leadoff hitter. Lineups are overrated, blah blah blah, but that's a solid choice.

I really have to wonder if a trade is upcoming in the rotation. It looks like Shark the Starter may have some legitimacy to it, and I'm really worried about a guy like Wood or Volstad being left out of the rotation.

Wood and Volstad both have minor league options (I think, correct me if I'm wrong), so one of them is likely to be left out of the rotation, at least initially. If I had to guess, I would say that the Cubs go with Garza, Dempster, Maholm, Volstad and Samardzija to start the season. Wells to the 'pen. Wood to Iowa.

All of this is pure conjecture, of course.

I highly doubt either would be in Iowa long. If Dempster or Maholm are performing well in June, they will be dealt to make room for whoever is in AAA (more likely Maholm, as he lacks Demp's NTC). That having been said, I imagine the talents of Wood and/or Volstad will likely be "wasted" in 2012 whether they pitch with the big club or not.

It's too early to make an accurate prediction about what the back end is going to look like. ST performance is going to sort a lot of this out. There's a lot of smoke with Shark, but it's still early.

I really hope Spring Training performance has virtually nothing to do with their decisions.

Pitching prognostications aside, Rizzo gets the start today:

David DeJesus, RF

Jeff Baker, 2B

Starlin Castro, SS

Blake DeWitt, 3B

Marlon Byrd, CF

Reed Johnson, LF

Welington Castillo, C

Anthony Rizzo, 1B

Matt Garza, P

Well that's a faint hope. Ideally you'd like that, but with this many arms competing for 1-2 spots, I'm not sure how you could expect ST performance wouldn't have some bearing.

Maybe not the numbers, but how they're throwing for sure.

Looking forward to seeing Rizzo. In yesterday's at-bat, he kinda reminded me of a left-handed Derrek Lee. His swing and miss on a breaking ball was so ugly that you wondered how he ever made contact, then he squared up on a ball really nicely.
