500k deal, will sit out first 50 games for PED suspension.

 

I know this was something that was discussed briefly in the Cespedes thread but it looks like it's a done deal.

Agreed. I don't get why people hate him. His run up the OF wall in Baltimore was cool as hell.

I can't fathom the #s he'd have to put up in a month and a half to get a few decent prospects in return.

If he can prove that he can still hit in that month in a half, contenders would be more than willing to give up a few decent prospects for the 2 month rental. They won't be gettting any blue chips, but its not impossible that a productive Manny could land the A's a few of somebodies top 15-20 depending on how good he looks and how desperate teams get down the stretch. If not, it's 500K, and that's not enough money to stun even the A's.

500k for maybe 100 games of a 0 war player whose triumphant, below-the-fold return to the game will only be slightly overshadowed by the return of valtrex the impaler?

if he comes back and rakes for a month and a half, he might fetch a couple of decent prospects. jim thome was still hitting pretty well last year and cleveland pretty much gave up a turd in a bag to get him. nobody is giving up a "few decent prospects" for a 2 month rental of a 40 year old who can't field his position and is one steroid test from being thrown out of baseball.

As for the term decent prospects, much like the term substantial compensation, it has a very open ended meaning.
