Amare has negative value to a non contending team--one dimensional player with a bad contract and terrible knees.

Orlando is not that team though.

What? They're not contenders WITH Howard. They trade him and they're in retool mode if not full out rebuild mode.

Amare is a terrible, terrible "asset" for any team that isn't on the cusp.

I still think they are contenders. They're playing bad right now, but they still could give us all we want in a series.

What does Chris Paul have to do with this? Explain to me how Amare is a more valuable trade piece than Andrew Bynum.

Amares not more valuable, but I don't think the Lakers will trade Bynum. Why not just sign Howard at the end of the year? Then trade Bynum for a point guard?

Sorry for bringing in CP3, I guess that's kind of apples to oranges.

Here's a crazy, yet likely, scenario: Luol Deng will return to play with a torn ligament in his left wrist before Richard Hamilton does the same with his leg ailments.

Hamilton admitted that he likely will sit for a while in an attempt to put the groin and right thigh bruise issues in his rearview mirror for good.

I'm not completely sure how Larry Bird Rights work, but for the Lakers to sign Howard, I believe all they need to do is find a way to trade Gasol for Deron Williams, who's a FA at the end of the year. Don't pick up Bynum's option, let other money fall off the books, like Barnes and Walton, sign Dwight, then resign Williams after Howard is on the team.

I've seen this another place as well.

When I use the trade machine, it has a BYC restriction on Noah until March 1st. That gives about a 2 week window where he could be included in a Howard deal.

Unless they overhauled the way it works, they can't do that. Miami had to renounce all its free agents in order to sign the Big 3. When you renounce your free agents, you lose your Bird rights, thus they couldn't afford to sign Deron.

I don't know if there are options on the contracts, as I'm just going off of Trade Machine, but I have 22.9M in 2012 contracts for World Peace, Walton, Blake, Fisher, and McRoberts (lol)

ETA: Quick look shows only Fisher with an option, and it's a player option.

You may be right. I was thinking Peace and Blake was all they definitely had under contract next year. Not sure if those others have options or guaranteed deals.

You could be right, but I know I heard that scenario laid out somewhere els. Maybe it was wrong.

The 4 teams for Howard and their cap space after this season:

Nets: 27.1 under

Mavs: 7.2 under

Bulls: 8.7 over

Lakers: 25.2 over

And for fun:

Celtics: 24.5 under

Nets have some boosts due to options and qualifying offers, but they can also cut loose Farmar to more than make up for it...not that they need 27.1 to sign D12

If Dwight makes it to FA, he's a Mav or Celtic. With the way their season's going though, I think he's dealt. If the All Star game wasn't down there, I'd say he'd be dealt before then even. In the end, I'll be shocked if he isn't a Laker.

I think Prokorov really underestimated how hard it is to build a championship team. Even with them moving to Brooklyn, once he missed out on last year's FA class, I think Williams was his last shot. Losing Lopez at this point kills them and I think he's probably already lost interest in the NBA personally. With the President thing and his lack of early success, I could see him selling the team within a few years, if not sooner. But, I bet he trades Williams and tries to salvage something anyway.

I was looking up the Bulls cap commitments just now on HoopsHype and I thought we had team options on Brewer and Korver next year? Is that not the case?

I have little idea why they're listed(do they have to keep renouncing these guys?), but the cap holds listed for the Lakers and Celtics are hilarious.

It just shows they haven't been under the cap for awhile. Cap holds only make a difference if you are under the cap, so there's no reason for teams over the cap to renounce anybody. Once you get under the cap then you renounce everybody who's piled up over the years.

For example, the Pacers just got under the cap this year so this was their transaction list one day:

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to Mike Dunleavy.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to Tyus Edney.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to T.J. Ford.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to Jeff Foster.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to Tim Hardaway.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to Lari Ketner.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to Terry Mills.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to Andre Owens.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to Brent Scott.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to Mate Skelin.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to Rik Smits.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to Zan Tabak.

The Indiana Pacers renounced their free agent exception rights to LaSalle Thompson.

BTW, as SSR said, cap holds are why the Williams thing won't work. Williams will have a maximum cap hold, so they would have to renounce him and lose his Bird rights before signing another maximum player. That's the reason cap holds are there to make sure nobody can do something like that.

Damn you must have been sad seeing the Rik Smits era officially end last summer.

Yup, it was tough! :-) Seriously though, Smits was always a strange story. For like 4 years after he retired, teams were calling him up in March begging him to come back and play for them in the playoffs (I remember the Shaq/Kobe teams doing it a couple of times at least). But he never would because he enjoyed motorcross racing too much!

This one is the closest I've seen with D-Rose's contract included.

I've seen those numbers a couple places, but I don't think it's right. The numbers (even when you add in the 5th year) are about 6 million short of what his extension was reported to be. My guess is that they didn't calculate the new Derrick Rose rule correctly.
