Does anyone know why Venditte was unprotected, other than he's a reliever that probably isn't a closer? He seems like a nice match for any bullpen.

Considering the slim pickings, he's definitely my top choice. Theres also an 3B prospect named Kevin Ahrens in the Blue Jays system.

Considering that we have the smallest 40 man, makes me wonder why we didn't protect a few more guys like Jackson, Flaherty, and Rhee, unless they'd planned on a few more signings by now. Also, I don't know if anyone else caught this but Marwin Gonzalez isn't listed in the Cubs guys. Oversite by them or could he not be eligible? Another thing, Esmailen Caridiad is listed as eligible, but he spent parts of 2 seasons on a big league roster.

Yeah I noticed him immediately.

In a two part draft preview, Manuel also names some of the top candidates to be selected. While the links require a BA subscription to see all of the players and their scouting reports, we'll at least cover the names here.

Pitchers: Caleb Brewer, Justin Fitzgerald, Brett Lorin, Diego Moreno, T.J. McFarland, Bryce Stowell, and Ryan Searle.

Hitters: Abraham Almonte, Eduardo Sosa, Ryan Flaherty, Jiwan James, and Beamer Weems.

Utility Guys and Role Players: Drew Cumberland, Jordan Danks, Blaine Hardy, Brandon Sisk, Justin Henry, Joe Ortiz, Trevor Reckling, Dae-Eun Rhee, Josh Smoker, and Johan Yan.

Flaherty, Rhee, and Searle(yes TT, Searle  ) on the list but not Jackson.

Major league service time has nothing to do with rule 5.

Andy Fox had spent parts of the previous 8 seasons in the majors when he signed a minor league contract with the Rangers in November '03. The Expos drafted him in Rule 5 3 weeks later.

The Cubs will pick 4th, due to teams with full rosters. Only 19 teams will have the ability to make picks, for the same reason. I fully expect us to lose Flaherty, Rhee, and Marwin Gonzalez. Then lose more guys for the compensation stuff for Boston and San Diego.

I guess we'll have to wait until MLB actually posts it on their website, because it sounded like "Lende Castillo" or something like that, and they clearly said right-handed pitcher Phillies AAA, but I can't figure out who that is.

Glad the Cubs only lost Flaherty and Gonzalez. I'd rather keep Rhee.

This is the only scouting report I've seen so far on Castillo from a fan who went to go see his minor league team play:

Lendy Castillo was throwing harder (94-96 mph) than anyone from either team, and by A LOT. The ball coming out of his hand just looked different than everyone else.

Carrie Muskat has it as Castillo:

#Cubs select RHP Castillo from #Phillies AAA roster in Rule 5 draft

Also, from Carrie:

#Cubs select 3B Ricky Alvarez from #Angels roster in AAA phase of Rule 5

This is all that I could find.

Benny Looper, the Phillies’ assistant general manager for player personnel, described 6-1, 170-pound Castillo as “wiry.” The Phillies have seen Castillo’s fastball reach 96 mph on the radar gun and “he’s got a good breaking pitch,” Looper said.

I fully expect him to be compensation to Boston. Also, with Lawrie, Aviles, and Scotoru, unless one of them are traded the Red Sox have a full middle infield and I don't see Gonzalez taking one of their jobs but my bet is that we'll let them keep him anyway as part of the compensation.
