Thr thing is though, Soriano's contract doesn't hurt us at all right now. We can't re-spend it on the draft or IFA's and it's not time for us to spend big on FA yet. Nor is there going to be much to spend it on anyway, on that front. Plus, our payroll is lower than it's been in a while AND heading downward. He's giving us solid production. Not worth what we're paying him, but probably close, to be fair. At this point, I want a solid return for him, or else it's not worth it to trade him. Someone taking the contract does nothing, I'd rather pay it and get something good.

According to Fangraphs he's been worth about $13.5 million thus far. Take that as you will.

Fangraphs also has him as providing the 5th most defensive value in all of baseball (3rd most on a rate basis). He's certainly improved and was always underrated defensively to begin with, but that much?

Soriano does currently have his best OPS+ number as a Cub though.

With a coaching staff that actually does most of the work of putting guys where they should be, it is not an outrageous claim.

no, it's probably still outrageous

Given his tools and the coaching, sure.

He just doesn't want to be on a team again with Ryan Theriot. Can't say I blame him.

I couldn't find it anywhere online, but my dad said he heard on the radio this morning that the Giants were interested in Soriano. He didn't know who said it though... So there must have been a little something to that story.

I'm sure by the radio he was talking about XM which was probably Jim Bowden.

Perhaps he wants to go to a team that doesn't play in a cavern.

Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS

assuming #dodgers complete victorino deal, that'd end the soriano talk with #cubs. leadoff is more of a need for LA anyway

I love that people are still this stupid.

Especially since Victorino has a .324 OBP.

#dodgers victorino deal looking very likely. LA likely set up possibility by acquiring b. league late monday. #phillies

@jaysonst #dodgers and #Phillies close to a deal sending Shane Victorino to LA for Josh Lindblom and 2nd player.

I think he could provide utility to Texas in a package with Dempster or Garza. Soriano loved playing in Texas, so he would probably waive his NTC for them. He could platoon with David Murphy in left, or just provide a right hand bat as a DH or off the bench with Michael Young appearing washed up, Napoli regressing and Nellie Cruz always an injury in waiting.

Spiegel on the Danny Mac show just casually mentioned (while they had Schuster on to talk about the trades) that he heard from a very good source that the Soriano/SFG thing from last night isn't true.

93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh just reported that the Pirates are "aggressively kicking the tires" on Soriano (not sure how that works, but yeah). Indications are that after Victorino-to-Dodgers and Pence-to-Giants, the Pirates feel they need to add offense in order to keep pace for the playoff push.

I went to 2 games at AT&T where Soriano hit 2 of the longest HR's I'd ever seen in that park. Makes no sense why he wouldn't want to go to a contender.

Hard to see Soriano accepting a deal to Pittsburgh if he actually turned down a deal to San Francisco.

PNC is a better park for him to play in. He's spent the majority of his career east of the mississippi, and maybe he had a boyhood affection for Roberto Clemente? Okay, he shouldn't but logic goes out the window with a lot of these decisions.

he just told you why.

but he hit 2 homeruns

Goony, point is he can hit the ball out of that park. It's not THAT difficult a place to play.
