i'm not saying the reed johnson signing was good or anything, but it's funny seeing how people on here get all worked up over it. it was an irrelevent amount of money and he isn't taking playing time away from anybody important. they wanted a mascot and apparently he's a good clubhouse guy, so they chose they wanted him around. who gives a [expletive].

I give a [expletive] because "good clubhouse guy" is absolute mythological nonsense for idiots, and he's the symbol of management not even trying this year.

That's a bit much.

Baseball is like any other sport...if the last couple guys are similar in talent and cost of course teams are going to go with the ones who they feel are a better fit for their clubhouse and organization.

Looking back, would anyone really want Z on this team? Nothing good would come of that. He wouldn't be happy, fans wouldn't be happy and his teammates may not be happy.

I'd be happy.

What would he have done, somehow make this team even worse?

what else would the cubs have done with the $1.2m they gave him? they already had a ridiculous amount of money left over this offseason. it's a one year deal. the fact that he got 1.2 instead of like 500k is completely and totally irrelevant.

i understand that talking about character and clubhouse stuff is usually meatbally, but i think people can get a little too extreme with it and forget there are other things that the front office have to consider beyond just production.

every team has crappy veterans. apparently they like having reed johnson around the clubhouse. they know a lot more about what goes on behind the scenes of a professional baseball team than we will, so if they want to bring him back for a meaningless role (for money that wouldn't have been spent anyways), then whatever.

That's just a bunch of BS with no basis in reality. Who the EF cares about a harmonious losing clubhouse? Getting rid of Zambrano did jack freaking squat for this organization. It's a crap team because they have crap players performing crappily. If and when they ever get better it will be because they have better players performing well. I don't give a crap about a team getting along as they lose 2 out of every 3 games. No sane person should.

Clubhouse guy is a worthless made up concept.

yea, you're so edgy with that opinion.

you know, there is a difference between managing personalities and attempting to make your team better by making a happier clubhouse. i'm pretty sure their logic behind signing reed johnson wasn't "he's good in the clubhouse, that will help us win more games".

trying to be so anti-meatbally about a concept that's beaten to death. yea, we all know that "clubhouse guys" and stuiff like that is largely irrelevent. that doesn't mean you have to be obtuse and get all flustered because a guy was signed for an irrelevent amount of money because they liked how he handles himself. $1.2 million dollars for a gritty veteran?! typical cubs!

if he was signed to a 2 year deal or got significant money, that's different. he was given a totally irrelevent amount of money in the context of the offseason. i can't imagine a way that it would possibly hurt the cubs, unless you want to lament the loss of major league PAs from a guy like dave sappelt.

I'm still trying to figure out what people have done besides disliking Reed Johnson and posting about it on a message board. That's about the only way it would be the overreaction some are trying to paint it as.

It's not quantifiable as of yet. That doesn't mean it's made up. I don't think any of us can speak definitely on the subject unless we've worked in major league baseball.

Theo and Jed have been successful and been around a lot of clubhouses, so getting rid of someone like Zambrano and keeping someone like Reed Johnson must mean they think it has some sort of value. They knew the team was going to be horrible and lose a lot of games, but they probably wanted to make sure Dale didn't lose the team early on or have high-profile players like Zambrano quit when the team started losing.

I remember being upset that they re-signed a guy that had negative walks on the season last year. If they want a veteran to lead by example, I'm hoping they get more guys that work a bloody count once in a while.

yeah, that would have been horrible

It certainly wouldn't have helped sell the product. Zambrano's a marginal player at this point, just like Reed Johnson. No sense in putting up with distractions if you don't have to.

He could have been the designated Hispanic scapegoat and kept some of the heat off of Castro.

That's Soriano's job.

Distractions from what?

So you're saying they might struggle to sell tickets in a down year if Zambrano was on the team? That makes a lot of sense.

You don't think Z's outbursts in the past have been distractions for the players and management?

Since when has Zambrano been a gate attraction? The fanbase turned on him years ago.
