Exactly. I can't say with absolute certainty that a situation like that wouldn't shock me to the point where I didn't take IMMEDIATE action. But if I were at all confident that's what I saw, there's no way you can go a decade at the university with Sandusky being around in some capacity or another without contacting the authorities. McQueary not rushing in to stop things or even waiting a day in shock to report things is not some despicable reaction. Failing to ensure it was properly reported in the aftermath definitely is.

I can't say with certainty that I'd take immediate action either. I do hope that I could have.

And you are right, seeing him for the next ten years at campus, knowing that? How in the world? I wonder if they spoke after that- some awkward interactions pretending it didn't happen? This whole story is a horror show and I can't stop thinking about it.

James Fallows of The Atlantic had an interesting post regarding this topic and what it might imply about human nature.

According to a source, Graham Spanier has submitted his resignation. Announcement should come after BOT meeting tonight.

in other news, our friends at the westboro baptist church have announced that they are taking a break from protesting at funerals and will be protesting at beaver stadium this weekend. a bunch of hateful homophobes in the midst of 100,000 alcohol-feuled sports fans, sounds like a fun mix.

Wow, first time the WBC won't be the most loathsome people at their protests?

How much money have they donated to Special Olympics?

None. God made people r3tarded because of the gays or something

Jesus please tell me he hasn't been at this special olympics thing for the last day? it's like he's trying to be the new IMB, except without actually being witty or intelligent.

I'm sorry. Why don't I float some money to the Special Olympics. Then we can be friends again.

look kyle, i guess this is what it comes down to for me. he's been at psu for 60 years and head coach for 45 years. he's done an enormous amount of good for the school - in how it's grown, donating several million dollars despite always being paid less than most top college football coaches, etc. he and his wife have given a great deal of support to the local special olympics programs, with which i was involved for several years. he's always had a high graduation rate and never had any ncaa violations. he's been a great mentor to thousands of young men.

(when i said "support to the local special olympics programs" i wasn't actually talking about money - they've been instrumental in giving s.o. athletes access to penn state athletes in various sports... usually the s.o. athletes will have at least one practice a year with soccer, tennis, basketball and other psu programs, and athletes who they look up to. every year there is a fund-raiser involving the football team and special olympics, and there's another s.o. fund-raising race that uses beaver stadium as the finish, and gets great attendance because people enjoy running down the tunnel and onto the field. so it's much more a matter of giving their time and access to players/coaches/facilities than anything financial)

but in all honesty, everyone, i am sorry that i wrote that, which caused something to break in kyle's brain and only read

if you give enough money to special olympics, you can enable child rapists

one can see how someone with this level of reading comprehension and rational thought ends up reporting for the williston daily herald. anyway, just wanted to clarify my position and express my deepest apologies to nsbb. back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Yeah, I gotta admit, you said it mockingly, but in the context of this discussion those two statements still look pretty functionally equivalent. I do kinda miss the Herald, maybe I should see if Da Bum is quitting anytime soon.

For someone sending passive-aggressive messages about how I'm on his foe list because he doesn't care what I have to say, he seems awfully interested in what I have to say.

There was just an ad at the bottom of my screen for Penn State clothing. I'm sure that stuff is driven by words on a screen or whatever, but still weird, considering.

Oh, one of the radio guys here was weighing in on this topic today.

"Man, if you're McCreary ... wouldn't you hate to see Sandusky in the showers?"

Maybe this thread can be less about the mutual dislike of you two and more about the unanimous (minus 2) disgust nsbb has for JoePa?

are you saying I'm among the "minus 2"? Because I'm not arguing that JoePa should stay. I'm in the "burn it to the ground" camp in terms of the administration. The only thing I'm arguing is that a) the football team doesn't deserve to be punished for this and b) despite the outcome, I don't think Paterno's intentions were malicious (and yes, I'm aware that his intentions mean jack [expletive])

Posted
His intentions over the last decade+ have apparently been something other than stopping his former coach from using the school as part of his rape-spree.

a) once you start talking about "the football team shouldn't be punished for something someone else did", you head down a slippery slope. where do you draw the line? teams get put on probation or receive sanctions all the time for things the players don't do. these probations and sanctions or whetever always negatively affect the players. the players mean nothing, this is not about the players and can never be about the players if you seek to do justice.

b) what do you think his intentions were?

Posted

a) What is the precedent for punishment when a coach commits an immoral (but not illegal) act that is unrelated to the current team?

b) I have no idea what his intentions were, and neither do you

Well, yes. Obviously.

yeah i don't think you can use that as a guideline because normally ncaa violations take a couple of years to come to light/be properly investigated, and most of the time the guilty party or parties have moved on. in most cases it's clear ncaa rules are being violated expressly for the purpose of giving a competitive advantage to the athletic program; this is a lot more murky because no players were involved, no ncaa guidelines were violated (as far as i know) and the only competitive advantage psu got was for people to not find out that a former coach was a child molester. but yeah, the players/coaches after-the-violation are almost always going to be the ones penalized, because that's the only way that you can have a punishment with any teeth.

i don't know nor do i care. the fact is that players get punished for things they don't do all the time, why should it be different in this case?

and obviously you have an idea, because you said you didn't think that his intentions were malicious. why even offer an opinion if you don't have one?
