If this is mentioned in another thread, forgive me. Seems to have gone unnoticed, though.

As the Cubs continue expanding their front office, sources say they are close to adding Arizona Diamondback scout Joe Bohringer as pro scouting coordinator. He's a 1993 graduate of MIT's Sloan School of Management, and like new GM Theo Epstein believes in making decisions informed by both scouting and statistical analysis.

Here's a Q&A Baseball Prospectus did with Bohringer

MIT works for me! I have a feeling I am going to have nothing but praise for all headlines Cubs related this off season.

A little more...

Bohringer takes a holistic approach to his work. Just as general managers like Theo Epstein and J.P. Ricciardi have combined scouting backgrounds with analytical approaches to run their ballclubs, so too has Bohringer wedded scouting and analytical principles in his work for the Mariners.

An MIT graduate with a B.S. in Management, Bohringer started his professional life armed with a knowledge and hunger for objective analysis. He hoped to parlay his business acumen into a career in baseball. After several stops, Bohringer landed at Triple-A Ottawa. From there, the parent Expos sent him to the Major League Scouting Bureau--scout school. Bohringer had already cut his teeth keeping pitching charts. He'd also worked on the administrative side, acting as a liaison between the farm director and the big league club.

But scout school, he said, changed everything. "It was an entirely different way to watch the game. We were taught to observe the mechanics, as opposed to the final results."

Despite that lesson, Bohringer has also immersed himself in statistical research. He's read Bill James, Moneyball, Baseball Prospectus, and other analytical tomes. He's just as comfortable at a Pizza Feed as is he working closely with Mariners' Amateur Scouting Director Bob Fontaine.

what is a pizza feed?

It's a Baseball Prospectus meet and greet.

Yep. I've been to one - was a pretty good time. Talked to Sheehan and a couple of other authors for a while.

Rather ironic that the ad at the bottom of this thread is for pizza.

ETA: well, it was. Now it's pasta.

I'm guessing that's more intentional than ironic.

You're seeing different ads than everyone else, most likely, based on your browsing history.

Been hungry today?

A bit hungover, actually. Where are the alka seltzer ads?

I lose about 30% of the potential revenues of the site to blocked ads. Month to date, there have been 1.33M page views that I've had to pay to serve up. But only 998K have served up ads, primarily due to ad blockers. From my point of view, that means that over 330 THOUSAND pages have been mooched from the site for free.

Is it really too much to ask to let the ads come through on a non-corporate backed site like this?

I think David should have to buy 10 of everything to make it up to you, Tim. :D

I feel guilty now, so I'll disable adblocker on NSBB only.

Thank you! :good:

I was once a premium member. I'd still be down to do my part that way.

And I have clicked to Coast to Coast tickets from this site before. Not sure if that makes a difference. I've also purchased from them before, but I'm not sure if the two actions ever coincided (again, not sure if it makes a difference either way).

EDIT - Just disabled ABP for NSBB.

Getting back on topic, pizza is good. Oh wait....

Sounds like another solid addition to the staff. I'm very happy!

Mooched? I can empathize with your larger point, but that's sort of a hostile attitude toward people who are willingly visiting your website.
