No, dave, I didn't. I clearly asserted that under the mistaken idea that the total revenues were around $24 million (remember the whole "floor" confusion?) and then guessing that expenses would be somewhere around $9-10 million. Nobody was arguing that the Cardinals were breaking even or running at a loss.

The only one I recall being confused is you.

Yes, hence why I said "confusion."

Everyone else seems to be pretty clear on why I thought $24M is the floor.

But I wasn't. As I've now stated multiple times.

You could go ahead and clear all this up by giving us your revised estimate of the Cardinals' profit from the 2011 postseason.

Clear what up? I've pointed out where I was mistaken about the figures and stated I was wrong. You're now just flailing trying to prolong something that isn't happening anymore and making up arguments that don't exist.

I think Hamels and Greinke are the most talented of the talented 2013 FA crop.

I would put Matt Cain above both of them and Anibal Sanchez, Ervin Santana, and possibly even John Danks and Shaun Marcum above Greinke.

?!?

Based on what? Wins?

Greinke has had a very pedestrian 100 and 102 ERA+ over the last two years. Yes, his pre-2010 stats are very nice, but he's been a mediocre pitcher the last two years and that worries me. All the guys I listed have been better than Grienke over the last two years. I'm not sure I would take Marcum over him because of age, and Danks mediocre 2011 combined with his career K/9 make me leery.

gotcha.

Don't let ERA fool you...Greinke is flat out filthy.

I would assume so, 10.5 K/9 is impressive over 171 innings of work. ERA+ has to account for something over a two year sample size though. Also, his whole anxiety disorder thing worries me as well.

It's not just the K's. It's also the great command that shows up in the lack of walks.

Greinke is filthy. But I'm worried about how he'd handle a major market as well. But, I'd take a shot and hope for the best here. As long as the circus like atmosphere we've had in the past has been cleaned up, I think we could still get a ton out of him.

Just have him room with Zambrano for a while. Steadying influence and all.

42,000 beers

x $5 margin

x 9 postseason games

================

$1.9 million

I just went at 70% of a 40,000 person crowd drinking 1.5 beers each. Very likely an overestimate.

I don't think you're off that much.

Attendance would be in the 47K range @ Busch.

If 1 of every 3 is drinking, and they're having 2 beers each, that's 31,000.

I was at game six. My wife and I spent:

2 hot dogs at 7.50 each

2 Cokes at 5.50 each

2 Nachos at 7.50 each and

2 hot chocolates at 12.50 each

1 water at 5.00

Beers were 8.50 each, Budweiser of course. Lot's of beer sales, much more than normal games. Cardinal fans were kind of jerks, but they had a great time. Lot's of Texas money too.

Sweatshirts, jackets, anything with a World Series logo flew off the shelves. The guy I got my tickets from tried getting a $20 World Series ticket lanyard at all 7 games, they were sold out the second they would hit the shelves, he never got one. Prices were not family friendly. Ownership is probably still counting the money.

Is that a typo? $25 for two hot chocolates? Unbelievable.

My wife was freezing and bit the bullet. Like I said, prices were not family friendly. They made a ton on Cool weather gear.

Wait so you are serious?

Go to a concert. Pay through the knowz for beer or food. Stand in line for sub-par bathroom facilities. Sound familiar?

Vaguely related,

In May of 2008 we went to Chicago and it was beautiful the day we went sightseeing. The night we went to Wrigley, the temp dropped to about 40 and the cubs couldn't keep sweatshirts and stocking caps on the shelf.

Just sayin'

I'm assuming you're questioning the validity of ERA+?

If you are, I can understand why you would be critical of it especially in the case of Grienke's 2010 where he was playing with one of the worst defensive teams in the league. However, the Brewers were a top 10 defense last year. Also, Greinke's line drive percentage last year was 22.4%.

I guess it's possible that he just had an off year, but his K/9 have always been all over the place. He's a bit inconsistent in that way, and personally I don't think adding him to a high pressure situation in Chicago is going to be a positive influence on him given his social anxiety disorder.

It's just a personal opinion though. I can see why you would be very interested in his consistently low BB/9. The guy is obviously going to be a huge committment and I personally would rather make the huge committment to Cain or Hamels. If not them, then a lesser committment to Sanchez or Santana.

All things equal, of course I would take Greinke over everyone but Cain or Hamels. That inherent risk is not equal though.
