I have no problem with it, but it might not have been in Ryans best interest. I doubt he'd get a higher dollar amount, but he could have gotten something like a 3/30 deal due to the weak market.

I guess you can't falut a guy for loyalty though.

I can't say that a player excersising an option where he is underpreforming his salary as loyalty. Loyalty is what Kerry Wood signed for last year.

I like Dempster, he's a funny guy and I think a cool guy to have around the team. But this was just business.

If he's less unlucky next year, I don't see why he couldn't get better than 2/16.

He'll be 35 this May, meaning he'll be 36 next May, with a much better FA pitching class. Teams aren't exactly lining up to give 3 year contracts to 36 year old middle of the rotation pitchers unless there's a severe lack of options.

Who said anything about 3 years?

I'm saying that if he has a good enough year he should be able to top $8M a year for 2. If he sucks or is unlucky, though, obviously not. That said, I don't really know if he could get 3/30 right now, anyway.

I can certainly see why he would think picking up the option was a good idea. I'm sure he feels like he can improve on his numbers from last year (might not be true but I'm sure he thinks he can) and then try and get more money next offseason.

Dempster made the best choice for himself and his family. There is no way he would get close to $14MM this year. He will definitely be motivated, this being a contract year.

if people are chucking $10m a year at randy wolf and jeff suppan then dempster sure as hell should do better than 2 years/16m.

Yup.

+1

Dempster has made over $61M over the course of his career NOT including the $14M option he just exercised. I'm guessing that at this point in Dempster's career he is looking out for his family first. I'll never blame anyone for doing that.
