Rusin is undersold as a back of the rotation option, btw.

You think he's ready?

He's pretty close. Great command, anti-hr and lots of ground balls. The only real knock on his statistical profile is a marginal strikeout rate. Combine that with merely adequate MLB stuff and you've got a decent, cheap 5th starter.

I'd take him over Coleman today and almost certainly would by midseason.

The more I think about it, the more likely I think we are to take a flier out on Sizemore. Maybe we could keep him at a corner and have him split time with any of Jackson, Soriano or Byrd to get him healthy?

This has Theo written all over it.

Randy Wells type upside maybe?

Somewhere around there.

Definitely.

I definitely prefer Rusin right now, but I'm actually starting to come around a bit on Coleman. I hated Coleman after his 4.11 ERA in 2010, and now I'm gonna pimp him a bit after posting a 6.40 ERA in 2011... which definitely feels weird. Thing is, his strikeout rate took a huge jump forward that nobody could have really anticipated. If he can find a way to keep most of the gains in his strikeout rate from this season while somehow eliminating the bump in his walk rate that came along with it, he could actually be a pretty decent pitcher.

Coleman's actually not a terrible 6th or 7th starter to have around in Iowa. I did think he pitched better than his results showed this season. I just like Rusin a bit better at this point.

That said, I really, really hope they're both at Iowa next year.

Hill performed really well with the dbacks in 30ish games, but was horrible for the Blue Jays for a couple of years... really not sure what to think here. Maybe if he's really cheap.

There's some upside here and Theo is probably pretty familiar with him. Personally though, he'd have to come really cheap to get me interested. But he is a guy who's probably wanting a one year deal to try and grab another big deal if he does well.

RT @BryanHoch Yankees did not pick up Andrew Brackman's option. He's now a free agent.

Brackman was 78th in BA's top 100 going into 2011.

Apparently the Brackman deal was structured so that if the Yankees turned down any options they had to release him. That's absolutely bonkers.

I'd kick the tires. He's still got some potential.

From a poster on prosportsdaily:

Mike Ferrin (MLB Network Radio XM 89 & Sirius 209) reported that Toronto has asked about Matt Garza. Apparently the Cubs had been scouting both Darvish and Wada, too.

I would certainly want Lawrie from them. Is Travis Snider ruined forever? If not, I'd want him or Drabek as well, with either Arencibia, Perez. Or D'Arnoud as well. We don't have to trade Garza, by any stretch, so if we do, we better get a package at least as good as the one we gave up for him. Hell, actually it ought to be better than that actually.

Garza for Drabek, Cecil, McGuire, Marisnick, and Hutchsinson

not that it means anything but i don't like drabek. i'd put money on him as a bust

Amongst the short, hard throwing young RHs coming into the league I'd take Chatwood over him. I'd be fine with Morrow, and I'd really like to steal Cecil.

I'm convinced Jamie Moyer will never retire .....

Moyer, who turns 49 later this month, is a free agent and has thrown for scouts twice recently, including Thursday in San Diego.

So far, the left-hander is getting rave reviews.

“Same as he’s been for the past 15 years — as incredible as that may sound,” one veteran scout said.

Sources say the Mariners, Rangers, Royals, Rockies, Orioles, and Pirates are among the teams that have sent scouts to see Moyer.

Any interest here from the Cubs, I wonder? Could be an intriguing minor league deal option.

Former Orioles right-hander Daniel Cabrera is pitching in the Dominican Winter League after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Agent Mike Powers told Morosi that Cabrera intends to return to MLB as a starter. The 6'7" right-hander hasn't appeared in a Major League game since 2009.

If he can throw strikes down in the Dominican, I'd be interested.

Yeah, that'd be what I'd want to hear. He's always had really good stuff and the ability to strike a lot of people out. Some of those 6 and 7 BB/9 seasons are ridiculous, though.
