Yes, instead of the Red Sox re-signing Ortiz to DH or even going after Prince to DH...they'll settle on Soriano.

They don't have Theo anymore. I'd be surprised if anyone left in that front office knew what OBP was much less WAR.

WAR? What is it good for?

I wonder if there's ever been an analysis (doubtful, given the Cubs prior management) regarding Soriano's bat speed. Given how heavy his bat is, it wouldn't surprise me if it's declined over the past few years. This obviously wouldn't solve everything, but maybe switching to a lighter bat would boost his numbers a bit and make him at least serviceable for another year, particularly given the fact that he can only hit fastballs.

Bat speed is kind of a scouting thing so it wouldn't surprise me if the previous Cubs management did look into the size of his bat decreasing his bat speed. That said, Epstein may look into it as well and come to a different (and perhaps more accurate) conclusion.

They still have Cherington and Bill James don't forget (unless Theo is able to bring James with him).

I know it was more of a joke. They have a lot of fantastic new age baseball minds Boston, while we have 2 (Theo and that Ari dude)

Isn't Bill James just an independant consultant?

Not sure. I saw his title as senior consultant or some such like that on the Red Sox site, but that may not mean he's an actual employee.

Don't forget Ricketts!

Yeah I almost put him there, but I wouldn't call him a baseball mind (at least not yet) as he readily admits that he has a lot to learn about baseball, but understands the philosophies that have made teams successful in this era of baseball and is smart enough to hire the right people to make it happen.

Yea, I was partially joking there but Ricketts has certainly shown to be very progressive to this point.

Is Soriano's arm still considered elite? Fenway would be good for him, I would think he could limit some doubles and his terrible routes would be less of a problem.

ESPN Insider rumors speculated that the Cubs and Red Sox should explore Soriano for Lackey. Doesn't really mean anything, but I hadn't seen it in print or pixel until now.

I don't hate Soriano nearly as much as most(and actually like him on a personal level), but you have to take that trade.

Doesn't really make sense for the Red Sox unless we give them cash as well. Lackey makes just over 15 mil /year through 2014 with a 500K option of some kind for '15 and Soriano makes 18 mil/year through 2014.

Z and Soriano for Crawford would probably make more sense. is 18 mil for '12, 19 mil or 9 mil buyout for '13. Crawford is roughly 20 mil/year through 2017. Basically, they end up paying double in 2012, 75% more in 2013, but they're off the hook from '14-'17.
