Good thing Lynch held on to Todd Noel so he could trade him a month later for Felix Heredia.

Christ, could you imagine having had Sosa and Piazza in the middle of the order that year and the next 5?

Bruce Levine claims a "source" says the Cubs would be able to have a press conference announcing a new executive during the World Series off days.

http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/7123358/chicago-cubs-announce-theo-epstein-hire-world-series

It's been talked about. They just have to ask special permission like they did when the sale was finalized.

EDIT - The stuff about Ricketts/Moorad is interesting... hadn't heard that up until now.

While compensation has been a sticking point in the Epstein negotiations, it's not expected to play as big a role with the Padres because of the strong relationship between Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts and Padres vice chairman/CEO Jeff Moorad, according to numerous major league sources.

In a corresponding move, Padres vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes would likely become Padres general manager, according to a source.

Moorad and Ricketts have become friends since the Ricketts family bought the Cubs in October 2009. Ricketts was in San Diego on Sept. 28, which was the last day of the regular season and did not return with the Cubs on the flight back to Chicago. Ricketts met with Moorad and sat with him, Byrnes and Hoyer during the season finale.

The Ricketts family has a strong relationship with Byrnes' brother through their bond business, and it's been confirmed that Ricketts had some informal conversations with Byrnes as far back as spring training. Byrnes was Moorad's GM in Arizona, where he received an eight-year contract in 2007. He was fired in 2009.

THURSDAY, May 21: In his office, Phillips waits for the call. He grows increasingly anxious. Is something else going on? Is Piazza heading elsewhere?

Unbeknownst to him, the Cubs have stepped up and offered prize catching prospect Pat Kline and right-handed pitcher Jeremi Gonzalez, according to a source. The Marlins reportedly are pushing for Todd Noel, a 19-year-old Class A phenom.

Finally, Dombrowski calls in the afternoon, says he needs more time. Phillips has to chill. The wait is interminable.

FRIDAY, May 22d: The Florida GM calls at 1 p.m. and makes a counterproposal. Phillips and his baseball people re-convene. Two more calls ensue. Phillips pushes to get a Marlins' prospect in return. "Steve, we're moving. We're moving quickly. This is it," Dombrowski said.

In Florida, Piazza gets a call from his agent, Dan Lozano, who has just spoken to Dombrowski. "You're heading to Chicago. That's how it looks now."

Dombrowski and Phillips are on the phone again. The Met offer consists of Preston Wilson, Ed Yarnall and a player to be named later (Geoff Goetz). Dombrowski finally agrees. Phillips calls Wilpon and Doubleday and immediately tries to reach Hundley, but he's already left for the ballpark.

Lozano calls back Piazza, who is in the shower. His father, Vince, hands him the cordless phone. "We're going to the Mets," Lozano told him.

"Are you kidding?" Piazza said.

Chone Figgins, anyone? With a name like "Chone" you have to have swag.

Also, there has to be room somewhere for 52 year old Oil Can Boyd.

I sent BA an email just for the heck of it, asking about general system placement and where McNutt would rank. Since I didn't ask them for the right to post their reply, I'll simply paraphrase and say that Callis said we're more middle of the pack, and McNutt would be top 10 in the Sox system. Someone should uh ... let Gammons know.
