Quote from a Cubs exec via Kaplan:

I don't see this ending well for the Red Sox. They are coming off as complete asshats and I imagine other front offices are going to take a dim view of dealing with them. They are making enemies right now. I guess the Yankees weren't enough.

But clearly the owner can care less about making enemies. Hell, it never hurt the Yankees right?

It's different with the Yankees they have resources that no other team can come close to matching. Other teams are envious of that position. The Red Sox are making this beef personal.

It's not like Boston is poor? They don't have the same resources, but it's pretty damn close, no?

According to Cots the Yanks and Red Sox have gotten closer the last two years in team payroll, but the Yanks still outspend by 20%. In 2008 and 2009, the Yanks spent more than $75 million per year more. So it's still a significant gap.

Whatever gets him the most attention I guess.

I have a hard time taking any report that comes from Kaplan with anything but a Mt. Everest sized chunk of salt.

That's alot of salt. Or as Winston would say.

That's a big twinkie.

Maybe this is a silly question, I'm not keen on contracts and legal specifics, but... can't Theo just, you know, quit and forfeit the last year of his contract and then sign with the Cubs? I know he's contractually obligated but isn't there some sort of legal recourse he can take to just leave and cut ties cleanly with the Red Sox?

Or trying to get the thread back on track. I guess I can't win with you. How can I make you like me? It really bothers me to the point I can't sleep at night.

That's actually a good point. Quit and if they make a stink about the contract money the Cubs will just pay it and he's home free. Call me crazy but that makes a lot of sense.

Just so our man Theo knows

According to one National League executive, neither Albert Pujols nor Prince Fielder will sign for more than $200 million this offseason, and Fielder will sign for less than what Adrian Gonzalez signed for in Boston (eight-years, $154 million).

The consensus is that Pujols will receive somewhere in the neighborhood of what he was reportedly offered from the Cardinals earlier this year despite his strong October. Fielder who is said to have turned down a $120 million, six-year offer that included a buyout from the Brewers, is also unlikely to see Adrian Gonzalez type money. Teams mentioned as possible landing spots included the Orioles, Blue Jays, Nationals, Cubs, Rangers, Giants, Dodgers, Angels and Mariners. Assuming Fielder is willing to DH, the Yankees could also be in the mix for his services.

Per his contract, unless both parties agree to break the contract, if he is going to work in baseball in 2012, it will be for the Boston Red Sox. He is well within his rights to retire and not work in baseball at all this year, but he would forfeit his pay.

there's probably some no compete clause in his contract, though.

Pujols is going to stay. I'd to get Fielder. If he gets too fat to play 1st base (which would be several years into his contract) I'm sure a lot of AL teams would take him in a trade and DH him. Man, I'm worried about the Yanks snatching him up tho.

True. He couldn't quit just to join another team. It can't be that easy.

Everything I've read ever has pointed to the Yankees not going after Pujols or Fielder. Do you have any actual reason for said worrying?

One snag in the talks appears to be how many (and which) staff members Epstein can take with him to Chicago.

According to several reports, one of the staffers he wants to take is from the medical department.

That could be head trainer Mike Reinold, one of Epstein’s closest confidants. Epstein also has great trust in vice president of baseball operations Brian O’Halloran.

No. Just that they are the Yankees and you never know what they will do or buy.

You actually kinda do when they have Tex at 1B and no need for DH.

You don't think that Fielder is an upgrade from Posada?

Quote from a Cubs exec via Kaplan:

"Larry Lucchino is one of the most unreasonable people I have ever dealt with and because of his frayed relationship with Theo Epstein he is looking to make a point at the expense of Theo's happiness and his desire to go to Chicago. I didn't believe that ownership group for one second when they said that they wouldn't stand in Theo's way if he wanted out of Boston. They are furious that he wants out and they are trying to make a point. Theo helped bring them two World Series titles and they have no loyalty to him and his happiness. They messed with Terry Francona and that was just an incredibly pathetic move and now they are trying to make life very tough for Theo," he said.

The Red Sox need a new PR department. Randy Bush, Crane Kenney or whomever is the source for this leak, just made them look like pathetic losers.

I don't think that the Yankees will get involved with both Wilson and Fielder and they have made it known that they intend to focus on their rotation in the offseason. Posada is coming off the books and perhaps Nick Swisher too. CC is probably going to cost them more next year and they are probably going to try and lock Cano up long-term to a very large contract. Add the fact that Montero will be ready to play 1B/DH/C and I just don't see them having interest in adding another $20 million to their payroll next year.

All good points.

Gotta go guys. Going out for the day and finally going to see Moneyball.

I love you all and I hope everyone enjoys this beautiful fall day.

GOD BLESS!!!!

What would the Sox do if this fell through? Keep Theo locked up in a closet? Because it seems sure as [expletive] he and Lucchino won't be able to work together any longer. The atmosphere there must almost tangibly toxic.

I still believe that the deal will get done and Theo will be here soon.

However, a quick question: Has Friedman extended with Tampa yet or would he still be a possibility?
