Steve Rain, P

The first Cubs prospects I ever got excited about before they hit the majors were Kerry Wood and Steve Rain because Harry asked Steve Stone about them on multiple occassions and Stoney was high on both.

Who was the other prospect we traded away for a reliever aside from Garland in 98 when we traded for Karchner and some other guy.

Was it Todd Noel?

EDIT - Some other guy = Felix Heredia.

The Heredia trade was Noel, Orie, and Justin Speier (best player in the deal) for Heredia and the great Steve Hoff.

The Karchner trade was for Garland straight up.

Jeff Kunkel.

And I don't know if these guys are really that obscure, but I'm thinking back to some of our home grown talent of the early '90s. There was Derrick May, Alex Arias, Hector Villanueva, and Rey Sanchez. I know May and Arias were supposed to be pretty good.

Wasn't Noel the best prospect in the Marlins trade?

I think he eventually got dealt for Lowell.

Yeah, Noel was the best regarded player at the time (former 1st rd pick I think). Speier ended up being the best player in both deals and by a wide margin, though.

That's funny. I vaguely remember Steve Rain existing, but that was before I followed the minor leagues and I had no idea he was ever any kind of prospect.

Kal Daniels and Candy Maldonado always stick out in my mind.

Haray [expletive] hated Maldonado.

I remember hearing stories about Candy from some ex Cub on the radio. When they'd go on road trips, he'd insist on having his very own floor in the hotel away from the other players. He'd walk around in mink coats and [expletive]. He sounds like he was quite the douche.

Again, not exactly obscure, but we can't forget the first big money bust I can remember, Mel Rojas.

And back to the he was a Cub once group, Todd Van Poppel.

ETA: never mind, Poppel was early '00s. I thought it was longer.

I was so excited about Rojas, thinking we had gotten a stud closer. Then he was awful.

I also hated when we got rid of Van Poppel.
