So he refuses trades to contenders for 2 years saying he's happy here and then now all the sudden he's all about playing for a contender. Hmm ok. Wish we could have gotten something for him.

Let Ramirez test his market. He's not the future of this club, though I love him for what he's provided over the years.

My feelings exactly. I think he will end up signing with the Cubs though.

he did this in 06 too, and ended up signing a contract that was the the only good value of the offseason (ok, Lilly too)

Alfonso Soriano: 8 years, $136 million, Cubs

Barry Zito: 7 years, $126 million, Giants

Carlos Lee: 6 years, $100 million, Astros

Aramis Ramirez: 5 years, $75 million, Cubs

J.D. Drew: 5 years, $70 million, Red Sox

Gil Meche: 5 years, $55 million, Royals

Daisuke Matsuzaka: 5 years, $52 million, Red Sox

Gary Matthews Jr: 5 years, $50 million, Angels

Jason Schmidt: 3 years, $47 million, Dodgers

Juan Pierre: 5 years, $44 million, Dodgers

Jeff Suppan: 4 years, $42 million, Brewers

Ted Lilly: 4 years, $40 million, Cubs

Julio Lugo: 4 years, $36 million Red Sox

Vicente Padilla: 3 years, $33.75 million, Rangers

Miguel Batista: 3 years, $25 million, Mariners

Adam Eaton: 3 years, $24 million, Phillies

i'm not really worried about his statements

Man, that is just hideous.

Without looking into detail on JD Drew and Vicente Padilla, did the Cubs sign the 3 best contracts for over 20M that year? (Marquis being the other)

Of course, they also signed maybe the worst.

Since Meche retired, he probably scoots past Ramirez. 11 WAR for 43 million.

Also they signed DeRosa that year which was the best of all the second base options. It was a horrible strategy to spend that much money in that manner, but the Cubs did a really good job of scouting the FA market that year.

And a contract like Daisuke looks even worse when you consider that the Red Sox paid 51 million dollars as a posting fee in addition to his contract.

Although I can't blame him for wanting to leave this suck-ass team, like someone else said, I wish he'd have said something sooner.

This just puts more pressure on us signing Fielder or Pujols.

What did you want him to say sooner?

That he no longer wanted to be here so we could have traded him.

He's saying it now because they no longer have a GM and nobody has talked to him about picking up his contract. While they could trade him they still had a GM and he probably thought Jim would pick up his option. He's talking right now, putting pressure on the Cubs to do something.

Are you from a future where Ramirez says this?

It's heavily implied. He said something like "They'll really have to work on getting a lot better" in order for him to re-sign, right? And the article linked in the first post has him saying "The Chances of coming back here don't look good" meaning... he no longer wants to play here.

You are making a very weird assumption. The chances not looking good are about the fact that nobody in the organization can/will talk to him about his contract situation as things stand right now. It says absolutely nothing about what he wants to do. For the greater part of a decade he's made it very clear he likes playing here and wants to keep playing here. Right now things are in flux and he and his agent are positioning themselves to negotiate with his team.

The decision is not up to him, it's up to the Cubs. What he was saying is that he's likely to be a FA b/c the Cubs haven't spoke to him. At the end of the interviw he said he wanted to stay.

Just to make out clear: it's up to the Cubs.
