Thank goodness we kept Marlon Byrd at the deadline.

Looking forward to having no option but Colvin in RF next year, were you?

If Jim Hendry can't manage to find a corner outfielder for less than $6 million that can put up an OPS around .800, he's worse than I thought.

How many qualified OFs do you think have an OPS of .800+?

Right now there are 25 in all of MLB.

Certainly a down year offensively, but there's typically over 40 outfielders with OPS's around .800, not to mention guys with potential that aren't playing, guys in the minors, etc. Finding a mildly productive corner outfielder should not be too difficult.

23 last year.

I can't find a year with more than 30, but it's really secondary to his point. It isn't super difficult to find an "okay" outfielder to play on a corner, but the threshold of "okay" is probably lower than many would guess.

Is that enough?

I think I lowered my plate appearance requirement to 400 or so, which is why I got more.

I get 29 from '10 that way. While I understand the desire to lower the PA limit so guys who lost some time to injury/young guys called up in May are included, but it also leads to guys like Fukudome who weren't exactly full-time players.

Another thing to consider is that yeah, if you push the right button you can get lucky and get an 800 OPS from dumpster diving, but you can just as easily wind up with a replacement level player that way.

From '09-'11 (sorted by qualified-no idea how that works over multiple years), there are 25 OFs with higher OPSes than Marlon Byrd.

right. you can end up with 2011 reed johnson if the guy posts a babip over .400, but if he doesn't get really lucky then you can get 2010 reed johnson. some guys you can pretty reliably peg in a certain range, but going after a reclamation project often yields a bad player who shouldn't be a starter any more. unless you're the cardinals, then they turn into 2011 lance berkman and halt their declining production with the best year of their life.

Or, the Cards took a chance on a guy who had been a really, really good player in the past but hadn't been healthy in a couple of years and finally was. Now, granted, they hit the jackpot in the fact that he's been reasonably healthy all year, but it's not like they're getting an MVP type season out of a guy with a history like Reed Johnson.
