Antigua has been rather good in Daytona's pen. Going to be interesting to see if he can get in a good start. Some bad luck in Peoria early, although the HR ball plagued him. Loosen is at a much more appropriate level for his skill and development.

Cabrera's been some sort of awful with his control in Iowa. He did have horrid control in AA last year before improving it in Tennessee to start this year.

damn, i picked the wrong day to go to Fort Wayne; i was there yesterday to see a game

fwiw, a few stray observations i had (it was Las Vegas 51s vs. Tucson Padres):

-James Darnell looked like Ronny Cedeno, physically, doesn't seem too promising in terms of power

-Kyle Blanks and Adam Loewen both hit majestic 370+ foot foul balls

-Brad Mills took a no-hitter into the 8th. i don't think he ever hit 90, but his changeup is deadly. guys looked completely foolish against it.

-for whatever reason, there were tons of IF popouts for both teams (former Cubs great Jon Leicester pitched for Tucson)

probably the hottest i've ever been in my life, too; we moved back from our seats a few rows behind the plate to the top of the section, in the shade

It's nice to have a 19-year-old left side of the infield at Peoria. Now if the Cubs could only teach them pitch recognition...

Vitters with a single and a walk in the continuation of the suspended game from yesterday.

More walks please. If he can be selective and recognize a good pitch to hit, he's got a shot at being a good major leaguer. I fear if he hasn't done it by now, he might not be able to do it. Until he gets traded to the Red Sox...

Bummer of an outing for Del Valle following him up.

i'm not sure we can give vitters much credit for not swinging as he's being walked intentionally.

Oddly enough, David Perez was considered a strong possibility for the #1 overall prospect in the NWL prior to the start of the season.

FWIW, Morel pitched tonight(not all that well, not horrible though) for DSL1. If he's suspended, I guess it hasn't started yet.

DeVoss is 0-1 with 4 runs scored and 4 steals for Boise. My guess is he's moved up rather quickly to Peoria.

he's going to be a fun one. my main question with him is whether he can keep getting on base a lot via the walk (or apparently getting hit by pitches too) when pitchers in the high minors and majors see that he doesn't hit for much power. and i guess also what position he will play since his main positions are 2b and cf, and we seem to have about 1000 prospects at those positions and no good prospects anywhere else.

He's got to get his BA up first.

DeVoss actually stole home yesterday in his last game at Arizona. It was on the back end of a double steal, but still pretty nifty to steal home the fourth game into your pro career then steal four bags the first game after your promotion.

I like the DeVoss pick a lot more now that he's at second than when we was yet another center field prospect without the pop of the three guys occupying the spot at our top three levels. He showed enough power his freshman year to think that there's an outside chance some coach can help him meld his freshman year approach with his sophomore approach. (Insert Colvin joke here)

he walked again (making it 0-1 with 2 hbp, 2 walks) and then stole 2b, so ended up with the fun line of 0-1 with 4 runs and 5 SB. frankly if he's a fast guy and a marginal power hitter than i like the shift he made this year, making lots of contact, hitting for a high average, seeing a lot of pitches and running a lot. if some XBH power comes along, great. but his tools seem more suited to the speed game and i'd rather have him playing that way than trying to hit 15 home runs a year but ending up hitting .250 with not enough walks.

I agree, I don't mean he should develop Eric Young syndrome. But to your point from earlier, if he doesn't at least have some extra base power the walks are going to stop coming at higher levels. If he follows the same sort of development arc Cerda seems to be on, only he can steal a bunch of bags and play good 2nd base defense I think I'd be good with kind of guy at 2nd if Flaherty can't stick there.

Back-to-back good starts for Alberto Cabrera!

Back-to-back good starts for Alberto Cabrera!

That was a good outing from Alberto. Let's see if he can keep it up, but he was 92-94 on the fastball, and showed a nasty slider at times. Control is going to be an issue for him as a starter, but if his stuff is at the level it was at yesterday, there's no reason why he can't make it as a pen arm at the very least.

Seeing Jay Jackson and Alberto Cabrera show good stuff the last two times out (Jay was in the low 90's, touching 93/94 occasionally) makes me feel a bit more comfortable that those two might be able to make the bigs in the pen. Both still need work to have a shot to make it as a starter, but there's just been such ... inconsistent performances and mixed reports on both this year that it's good to see them doing well, giving us some upper level arms to have hope on.
