Hahaha. Hilarious. Keep signing those washed up guys, Hendry. Dont worry about anything else out there or this pitiful joke of a team.

Do you think signing Dave Bush is distracting him too much to make trades as the deadline approaches, or do you think he thinks signing Dave Bush plugs a hole, and now he doesn't have to worry about the rotation going forward?

Personally, I just think it was a waste of time in general. I highly doubt that he thinks that Bush plugs any kind of hole any more than Davis, Ortiz, or Lopez did, but on the other hand, if they are looking for another starter, they should just call up Coleman, Jackson, or Cabrera, who have been bad, but theres a chance that they could have some kind of future. If your a team on the brink of contention, it would make sense to keep trying out every retread you can get your hands on in hopes of finding lightning in a bottle, but as is, 12.5 games out of 1st and 19 under .500, I just dont get it.

I can understand looking at washups that were once good like Colon, Garcia, and Milwood, but we just keep picking up these guys who were decent at best when they were in their prime.

Or it prevents an arm from AA being forced into AAA duty before he's ready.

I strongly doubt they'd want to destroy what has to be shaky confidence in Jackson and Cabrera right now. The way they have pitched this year, they would be destroyed in the majors. Is that what you want to see?

Agreed, but isnt Casey Coleman a fingey enough prospect who seen enough big league action that they could just call him up and see what hes got?

Am I the only one who thinks Coleman just sucks? Perhaps "sucks" is too harsh, but I don't feel like he's THAT good. Not much velocity, and from what he's shown, not too much command.

You mean Dave "Let me hold the ball outside of my glove so you can see what pitch I'm about to throw" Bush?

I remember when he was on the Brewers there were some articles gushing about his ability. About how every GM would love to have him on their team because of his talent and stuff or some such nonsense. Dave Bush has never been good.

I dunno, I get what y'all are saying, but the Cubs have never seemed to be overly shy about aggressive promotions in the past. It's hard for me to buy that being all that relevant. Then again, admittedly, I want Hendry gone so bad I'd be critical of almost any decision he makes these days.

We've seen what Coleman's got, and it's not good.

It's pretty sad we have nothing in the farm pitching wise that is better than Bush/Lopez, etc.

Well that's completely and totally wrong.

We do, they're just not quite ready to pitch in the majors yet. Trey McNutt would have probably been up by now and almost certainly would be better than the Ortiz/Davis/Bush/etc group. However, McNutt has spent two stints on the DL and is just now coming back from (I think) a rib issue.

There are a number of other guys who are better than that group of vets, but it doesn't really make sense to rush those guys up right now because they're not completely ready and still quite young.

Do we not have a Gordon Gecko SOMEWHERE in Hendry's ear saying this is just another dog with different fleas?

I want to see Jay Jackson in the 5th spot soon. Unless his velo hasn't come back. Hell, I may want him there even if it hasn't.

Seriously.

Amazing that Hendry simply ignores all of those young, unemployed former Cy Young winners that are just looking for a team, and signs Dave Bush instead.

Obviously McNutt is more talented than the garbage we have been running out there lately, but he's not ready/injured. Other than that, it's sad that we have no other SP prospects that are ready / close to ready in the farm.

I think you would have a hard time finding many farm systems worse off with starting pitching arms being ready. I mean, Jay Jackson should be the guy, but he's had a pretty tragic season. Outside of that, what is on the horizon? Struck? He hasn't fared well in his promotion.

Yes, we know that Tim Lincecum and Tommy Hanson arent out looking for work, but the point is theres no point signing any of this tripe at this point. This team is done. cooked. demised. Stick with what we have, and if they need someone else, just call back Casey Coleman. He might be garbage, but hes our garbage. I dont know how much theyd have to pay Bush if they called him up, but Im assuming its money that could be thrown at some of the lower profile, mid/late round draft picks. He may be younger than Davis, Ortiz, and Lopez, but the fact is that his ceiling is Dave Bush.

they probably have to pay him minimum mlb salary, just like they'd have to pay coleman the mlb minimum. do you really think that signing dave bush to a minor league contract will prevent the cubs from signing draft picks? come on.

Robert Whitenack was coming on really strong until he had to have TJ surgery. He hadn't pitched much in AA this year, but had been pretty dominant before his injury. The top end of farm took a hit when we traded Archer, called up Cashner (and he got hurt), moved Carpenter to the pen and with the implosions of Diamond, Jackson, and Chen. Coming into the year the latter three arms would have been expected to be, at worst, similar to what we've been running out there in the 5th spot this year and maybe better.

The strength of the pitching on the farm is in the lower minors, however, with guys like Ben Wells, Luis Liria, Austin Kirk, and others.

i think that's almost always the case, though, with the exception of teams like the braves who have teheran, minor, vizcaino and delgado at AA or AAA. usually teams have lots of live arms in the lower minors - guys with strong fastballs and poor secondary stuff. then they also have guys with solid secondary stuff and fringy fastballs who get hitters out on guile and command (kirk may fall under this category), only to get beat up on by more advanced hitters. my point is that there are lots of prospects in the low minors who have developing to do, but don't end up making it because their secondary stuff doesn't come along, their fastball just isn't good enough, or they blow out their arm.
