I started a discussion about this in the "Other Games" thread, but wasn't sure where it should have gone... either way... bunch of haymakers thrown, none landed. I kind of applaud Gregg for saying what he did afterwards... and it made Beckett look like a douche.

I don't. It is one thing to say that you have the right to throw inside, but it is another thing to throw right at someone's hip in multiple pitches. And Ortiz was running to first, just not quick enough for Gregg. If Gregg is so tough he wouldn't have actually tried to throw a punch.

Gregg is a little bitch. Ortiz had every right to charge him. It's ridiculous to expect a player to just let a pitcher chuck 90MPH baseballs at him. A player watches a HR and a pitcher chucks a potentially career ending object at him; there's something very wrong with that.

If they're afraid of getting hit, then don't stand in the batters box.

Just let a guy throw 95 MPH fastball right at you only because you are destroying their team? I really don't think Ortiz has a fear problem.

On a serious note though, the pitcher has every right to throw inside. I don't blame Gregg one bit for throwing inside... multiple times. People like Ortiz have so much armor on them anymore that they can just crowd the plate and try to take away the inside portion of the plate. I'm not saying pitchers should be hitting batters purposefully, but throwing inside? That's fair game and should be done more often.

How do you think guys like Drysdale would do in today's offensive-friendly version of baseball?

Purposefully throwing at a batter is not considering throwing inside or establishing the inside.

Ortiz didn't charge because Gregg was throwing inside. He charged because after Gregg got him to flyout to his infield... apparently Ortiz unknowingly broke the "you must run out every fly ball you hit" unwritten rule and Gregg screamed something vulgar enough that prompted not only the umpire to immediately eject him but also provoked usually mild Ortiz into a fight (and I can't really remember Papi charging the mound much before; he may have and vie forgotten it, but I assume he has a pretty level-headed reputation). It seemed pretty obvious that Gregg was picking a fight.

Gregg was also pissed that Ortiz swung on a 3-0 count when Red Sox were up 7 as well. Apparently when being up a bunch, swinging at a 3-0 count is a baseball no-no.

What Gregg has said after the game...

“I think you show them that we’re not backing down,” Gregg said. “We’re not scared of them—them and their $180 million payroll. We don’t care.”

“Apparently, he didn’t like me telling him that stuff and he came out there. That’s part of the game—he has the right to come out there,” Gregg said. “I’m going to defend myself if he comes out.”

“There’s 17 inches on the plate. You’ve got to use all 17,” Gregg said. “That’s what I was doing when I was out there. They’re going to whine and complain about it because they think they’re better than everybody else, but no, we have just as much right to pitch inside as they do.

“This is a team sport. I take offense to every run scored off every one of our pitchers. I take offense to every one of our hitters that’s hit every time I’m out there.”

“You get tired of getting your butt kicked every night when you come in here and I’m going to stick up for what’s ours and try to get the plate back.”

"We are playing the game of baseball," Gregg said. "You got to go ask David what he was thinking. It's 3-0 and you are up seven runs and the opposing pitcher gets upset with you for hitting a weak fly ball and not running. If he thinks there's something with me saying that, than he's got other things he needs to figure out in this game."

Every baseball fight not involving Kyle Farnsworth ends up looking like a bunch of pansies trying to slap fight

It's not MLB, but the one where the guy kicks the catcher first before charging the mound ranks high in my book.

Wasn't that spring training?

I like the home plate umpire running toward Ortiz and Gregg like he is going to try to keep them from getting at each other then getting about 3/4 of the way there before thinking better of it and heading the other direction.

This seemed like it was two guys who wanted to look like they were willing to fight but didn't actually want to fight.

I always enjoy the Nolan Ryan and Robin Ventura fight.
