Colin Richardson story: http://www.idahostatesman.com/2011/07/08/1719265/new-pitcher-faces-the-fire-in.html

“He’s a really young kid, first time pitching in front of fans and had to travel,” Rosario said. “I was hoping we didn’t have to use him.”

Richardson got the call in the 10th inning and promptly walked the first batter he faced, not exactly what manager Mark Johnson had in mind.

“I didn’t have any doubt in him, but he was a little shaky at the start,” Johnson said. “He’s always been a strike-thrower and has had composure and poise on the mound.”

After a sacrifice bunt and an infield single, Richardson was in a first-and-third jam with one out. He induced a short fly ball to right field and a pop-up to the catcher to escape. He allowed an infield single in the 11th, but retired the next three hitters.

“I’m really glad and happy for him,” Rosario said. “He was able to throw strikes and keep his composure and execute pitches when he needed to, and a result, get the W.”

As a side note, was skimming over the DSL rosters, and it looks like the Cubs are shifting some DSL Cubs1 guys to DSL Cubs2. The guys that stood out were Jeffrey Baez, Xavier Batista, Carlos Galvez. Looks maybe like an effort to bulk up DSL 2 for a push.

mcnutt gave up 2 runs in the first inning (including a home run). tennessee scored twice in the bottom of the frame with 4 singles, brett jackson and flaherty had one apiece. vitters struck out.

daytona wasn't rained out, although it would have been better if they had been. lorick gave up 8 runs in 1.2 innings and it's 8-0.

Jay Jackson with his 2nd straight non awful (so far) start. 6 IP 8 K 3 BB 7 H 2 ER. His day may be done as well with 94 pitches. If he can get going, Id take him well over Coleman, Ortiz, or Lopez. Hell, Id take him over those 3 even if he doesnt get it going.

PC Chens tearing it up in Boise. Could he make his way to Peoria by the end of the year? Was he a big international signing?

Cubs: IF Pin-Chieh Chen, Taiwan - $300,000 bonus

Cal has set up an international signing bonus thread on this board, so you can always check.

Box Scores

DSL Cubs 1 lost 4-1 Box Score

6'3" lefty Angel Mejias made his debut, with two perfect innings. He was on BA's list of bonused Latins from last year. Didn't specify how much he received, so as cal has listed "low 6-figures". Of the guys that had been listed as 6-figures players, he was the only one who hadn't played yet this summer. So being a pitcher, I'd wondered if he wasn't injured.

So I'm delighted to see him pop up in a box score and pitching effectively.

Scouted as a slender 6'3", he's 17, lefty, by report as of last summer touched up to 90.

I sometimes remind myself that these Latin reports, when a kid signs when he's 16 as Mejias did, the scouting data is really based on the equivalence of an American junior high/JV guy. Very premature. But I'd think if there was a freshman lefty at my HS who touched 90 and was tall, I'd figure the chance was there that he'd project into a big-league power arm.

Thanks, craig. I saw Mejias show up in the box score as well. I'll be following him throughout the summer.
