Wes Darvill story: http://www.idahopress.com/sports/bigger-better-darvill/article_53ed7c9c-a866-11e0-aeaf-001cc4c002e0.html

He was 6'2", 156 lbs when he was drafted. No wonder he has struggled with power.

“We challenged him last summer and made him part of the Colvin Camp program, and had added 10 to 15 pounds,” said Oneri Fleita, the Cubs vice president of player personnel.

Does Darvill project to develope any kind of power?

Most expect him to. How much is the question. He was a difficult guy to project in that, coming out of HS, he had good to plus speed, but was so skinny. Some folks think he could become a Flaherty-esque guy, particularly if he moves permanently off short (should be clear, the Flaherty comps were pre-2011, when there was some question as to how much power Ryan Flaherty could produce).

flaherty hit 20 home runs in 2009, i don't think there was ever much question that flaherty would have good power for a middle infielder... i think the bigger issue with him was where he would play.

Hopefully this is the last summer we have to worry about FSL rain outs. Of course minor league Cub pitchers might prefer Florida rain outs to the California League.

The Smokies are facing Chris Archer today.

Tonight is also Ladies' Night featuring Chris Archer at the ballpark:

Montgomery Biscuits (Southern League)

Ladies Night featuring "Win a Date With Pitcher Chris Archer," July 7

Chris Archer is a right-handed starter for the Biscuits, but on Wednesday the only thing he'll be pitching is woo. The (presumably single) 22-year-old is playing the role of "The Bachelor" during the Biscuits' annual Ladies Night promotion, and one lucky female fan will win a date with him. Even those who miss out on this opportunity should go home feeling satisfied, thanks to the mini-massages on offer at the concourse as well as the many rounds of speed-dating scheduled to take place within the stadium bar. At the very least, a kiss from beastly mascot Big Mo is a virtual guarantee.

Sure, but this year, he's certainly showing good power for a corner infielder/outfielder, so I wanted to make that small distinction. I know some folks felt that Darvill could have solid-good power for a middle infielder, but of course, that's a lot of frame and swing guess-work.

Furthermore, I know there were folks after 2010 that questioned how Flaherty's power would play against tougher pitchers. I remember the reports back in 2008 and 2009 on Flaherty gave the impression that some folks thought he was a polished bat eating up younger pitchers.

the bonus babies had a nice day for DSL Cubs 2... j. baez was 1-2 with a pair of walks and 2 SBs, penalver (ok not so great) was 0-3 with a walk and an error, and candelario was 3-4 with a home run, walk and an error. x batista hit his 6th home run, which seems like a lot for a 19 year old in that league.

Del Valle wasn't all that good tonight in his debut at Peoria. On the other hand, Baez was moved over to DSL2, I guess.......Sanchez, who has struggled, is the only bonus baby left on DSL1, and he hit a homer tonight anyway.

sanchez seems to have some pop but the other hitting skills seem pretty poor.

it seemed to be debut night for the cubs - rusin at AAA, loosen at AA, del valle at low A.

that berlind guy doesn't look like he'll be around too long, judging by his performance tonight

ben wells: 5 ip, 1 h, 1 er, 2 bb, 3 k, hbp, 9 go/2 fo

not so good for canadian draftee brian smith: 2 ip, 5 h, 5 er, 1 bb, 2 k, 1 hr

reggie golden has singled and walked twice in his 3 plate appearances... also stole a base.

Love the patience from Golden

Unfortunately the Cubs don't have a good track record with teaching young players to take walks, fortunately Golden already has it down.

Obviously its early, but I think Golden could really break out next year if he stays shape this off season. (camp colvin maybe?)

Love his upside

isn't camp colvin the term for having skinny guys start lifting a lot and maybe have beefcake 3000 to put on some weight? golden needs to just exercise and not eat junk food.

We probablly should have kept Archer. Especially if TB would have taken McNutt

Accept for the whole McNutt having a far better season than Archer aside from the injuries thing.

(a) accept? #-o

(b) he really hasn't been better, certainly not "far better"... his K rate is way down, and his whip and era are just about as bad as archer's.

Interesting to see the "Camp Colvin" to "Colvin Camp Program" switch. Camp Colvin always did sound a little silly.

This was Tim Wilken on Darvill before the season: "He won't come quickly. He's four years away," Wilken said. "But wait until you see what he can become."

Big on Geiger (who is tearing up Mesa) before the season as well.
