Looks like Harman got hauled up to Daytona. Good to see - it was more than time and he didnt have much left to prove in Peoria. I saw him pitch against the Timber Rattlers a couple weeks back, really good looking relief pitcher.

Smokies win 1-0 on a 13th inning Josh Vitters sac fly, his second plate appearance after being hit by a pitch in the head on Friday.

How does a 2012 bullpen of Dolis, Belevieu, Rhoderick, Samardzjia, Carpenter, Marshall, and Marmol sound?

strong but unlikely. You can keep samardz off as far as i'm concerned...decline his expensive option and go from there..

Jose Rosario starting for Boise, Ben Wells is piggybacking.

Pin-Chieh Chen and Wes Darvill continue to hit at Boise. Ditto Dustin Geiger down at Mesa. And Chen got 2 doubles and Geiger a HR. Ben Wells appeared to tire tonight, he had a scoreless first 2.2 (he came in to the 4th inning w/ 1 out) before giving up 4 runs in his final 1.1 innings.

Also, Larry Suarez has a 0.00 ERA with 22 K/5 BB in 13.2. I keep hoping he'll get another chance to start.

Brett Jackson has had an awful June, .211/.313/.352

Surprisingly the season numbers are still pretty solid for a CF (.253/.371/.437), but things aren't looking up right now.

Denial - Denial - Denial.

Jackson's performance has dropped like a stone in a wishing well after the first 6 weeks of the season. I don't know if the reason is lingering effects from his hand injury or he is pressing to fulfill his personal time table to reach the majors. His drop in production and rise in strikeouts parallels with Marlon Byrd's injury (along with his injury). Remember, he dropped in the draft because he pressed the last year in college to hit more HRs to impress the scouts. And I will throw out a left field thought: Matt Szczur. Szczur is the new darling of the online scouting media (example: BA). Jackson might be pressing to keep his talent status within the Cub organization while Szczur is being talked about as the new stud CFer (and we can't forget HA's rising status). Players are keenly aware of the competition, from across the dugout to teammates.

I still think Jackson will be an everyday MLB player, however, he needs to mature past his history to impress on his terms.

Ha seems to be in a bit of a slump himself.

Is it just me, or does it seem ridiculous that John Gaub threw 60 pitches in 4 innings of relief in last nights game for Iowa? It looks like he did well though, but not what you want out of a usually 1 inning relief pitcher.

I believe that since Jackson's hot April, that he's hitting .204 or something like that since. Ugly.

Arizona Phil with some good reports on Brian Smith and Dustin Geiger:

The Cub Reporter[/url]"]18-year old LHP Brian Smith (Cubs 2010 40th round draft pick out of Pickering, Ontario) got the start for the AZL Cubs, and threw a solid four innings (61 pitches - 40 strikes), allowing just one unearned run on five hits and a walk, while striking out three. A member of the Canadian Junior National Team prior to signing with the Cubs right at the August 16th signing deadline last year, Smith had his second quality outing in a row, especially significant since he was absolutely terrible in his pro debut at AZ Instructs last fall (30.00 ERA, 4.33 WHIP, and a .527 OppBA) and got a late start to the 2011 season, not pitching in a game until more than halfway through Extended Spring Training. But he has looked OK in AZL action so far (albeit just 7.1 IP over two games), displaying a high-quality curve and change-up, and the poise and stamina needed to throw multiple innings.

19-year old Dustin Geiger (Cubs 2010 24th round draft pick out of Merritt Island HS - Brevard County, FL) continues to be the offensive leader for the AZL Cubs. After two more hits tonight (including the 390-ft+ home run to left-center that gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead, and a picture-perfect hit & run single to right that advanced a runner from 1st to 3rd and led directly to the Cubs second run), Geiger is hitting a robust 400/423/769 (including three doubles, two triples, and a HR) through his first six AZL games, while playing adequate defense at both 3B and 1B (although he looks better at 1B). Geiger has showed tremendous improvement in his power stroke over the last few weeks (having hit 325/367/525 with three doubles, two HR, and 12 RBI over his last 13 Extended Spring Training games), and I had thought that just based on that he would get assigned to Boise, but the Cubs chose to place 3B-1B Wilson Contreras on the Boise roster instead, while keeping Geiger in Mesa. But if he keeps slugging the way he has over the last few weeks, I would expect Geiger to get a promotion to Boise (if not to Peoria) before much longer.
