...look into trading Soriano to the White Sox for Dunn? The contracts look to expire the same year but the Cubs would save a total of $16 million off Soriano's contract. Dunn is 3 years younger than Soriano though that may not be as much a factor given all that has been said regarding Dunn's condiditoning. Sox might take on Soriano as they are better positioned to win now.

Swapping contracts of Soriano and Dunn? I'd do that in a heartbeat. There's not a chance in the world the Sox would even consider it, though.

Dunn is significantly more likely to be highly productive over the next 3 years and his poor defense would have much less negative effect at first base as opposed to Soriano's decreasing defense in left. And even if/when both fall off a cliff, Dunn at least has patience to fall back on, while Soriano has nothing. Factor in that Dunn is 3 years younger and cheaper and there's no reason for the Cubs not to do that deal, while there's no reason for the Sox to do it.

I'm not sure if I would. If there were a 3rd team that "wanted" Dunn as a 1B/DH, then I'd be much more willing, but putting Dunn in LF or passing on the 1B options to keep him there isn't a better outcome at this point IMO.

I would do this in a heartbeat. Assuming 1/2 the salary is owed for this season, the Cubs would save $13 million over the next 3 1/2 years. I'm sure we could find a team willing to take a chance on Dunn if we eat $10 million per year (leaving the other team owing $4 million, $5 million, and $5 million). In other words, we might get out from under Soriano's contract for about $36 million spread over 3 1/2 years and possibly get a prospect in return for Dunn.

Going forward, Dunn is likely to be more valuable to other teams than Soriano. So even if nobody else has interest in Dunn now, if he can hit a hot streak and get his numbers back into a reasonable area, there could be interest from teams offering real prospects and real money for him - as opposed to simply hoping to give Soriano away for minimal savings.

Why are you talking about this like it even has a shred of possibil-...oh. Right.

I didn't start the thread so I don't understand using my quote to question the possibility of such a trade. Obviously, the Sox wouldn't go for the Soriano/Dunn deal, but KG asked the question and solicited replies. If such a deal could happen, I think there would be a decent possibility of another team willing to take a chance on Dunn if the Cubs ate 68% of his contract. Then again, we might be able to trade Soriano if we eat enough to make him a $4-$5 million per year player.

Dunn is as lost as I've ever seen a player at the plate. He's striking out over 40% of the time now. He's going to face a long rest on the bench soon.
