Any possible way Florida is sick of his act? I don't think they would trade him because of the new stadium and the fact that he is usually awesome, but who knows.

I'm hoping he continues to suck badly all season. Would we have enough firepower to trade for him without including Castro (which would obviously be a deal wrecker)?

I don't think they've ever liked his act and have been sick of it the whole time. But as soon as he starts hitting more fly balls and normalizing his BABIP some they will love him once again. It's very rare you sell on a 27 yr old superstar. Plus him heating up throughout the rest of the summer will somehow be attributed to the return of Jack McKeon and everyone will be hunky dory down there.

I think the new stadium makes this totally inconceivable from Florida's perspective. They can't stick the taxpayers with a huge bill and then trade away their most marketable asset.

Unless they win the World Series, in which case they'll trade away all their marketable assets.

Why not? Once you get the free stadium, why would you continue to pretend to try?

Well, it's worked wonders for Philly. The Pittsburgh model is to wait 2-3 years before stopping to pretend.

Loria finally gets his stadium.

I hope he dies in it.

Ok, so after gauging the comments, its not likely, but not 100% impossible, so I'll throw a package out there:

Brett Jackson

Trey McNutt

Chris Carpenter

Josh Vitters

As much as I like Jackson and McNutt, I'd do that. Hanley is a top 5 player in baseball when he's functioning.

Sign Reyes and Fielder and have the best offensive infield in the history of baseball.

wed have a very solid offense, no farm system, and a mediocre pitching staff. Wed be the 2010 Brewers.

Or the division leading 2011 Brewers. We'll basically have the same starters next year as we do this year with at least 1 addition.

When a starting pitcher who was planned to be in the rotation all year starts, the Cubs are around .500. Add a ridiculous offense to that group and we'd be pretty good. We're really bad this year because we're like 4-20 in the Davis/Coleman pile of crap starts.

He's played at replacement level so far this year, and he's owed 46.5 million the next 3 years. If he were playing at his previous MVP level, then I could see the attitude of "here's our 10 best prospects, you pick out 4 you like and we'll call it a deal". But Ramirez's issues are more than fleeting, and he's owed a lot of money to a team that doesn't like paying players at all. I wouldn't want to trade both Jackson and McNutt for Ramirez, never mind throw in Carpenter and Vitters in there.

Is it that incomprehensible?

Philly pretended to try when the stadium was coming and that actually led to being really good for a long time. Pittsburgh pretended for a couple years then dumped everybody.

Understood and I pretty much agree. I just don't know if Florida would go for anything less than a huge haul.

I'd agree if it weren't for the circumstances. Hanley's play hasn't been just bad, it's been horrific. He's had run-ins with 2 managers(or is it 3?). He's about to make more money than the Marlins have ever paid one player, and they have other contracts and arbitration eligibles to deal with as well. Maybe the demand is great enough to still command top flight prospects, and I'm certainly not saying they should approach Florida with "you'll take Casey Coleman and Rebel Ridling for Ramirez and like it". But given the circumstances I'd try my very best to keep McNutt and Jackson, and if the package ends up being high volume of the rest of our well thought of prospects, then so be it.

I wouldn't call what Philly was doing, "pretending to try." More along the lines of "Having Ed Wade as a GM"

Maybe a little of both. They were a middling team for two decades and seemed happy to finish 3rd with a $30-$40m payroll.

yeah they behaved like a mid-market franchise, which is embarrassing considering that philly is (i think) the #4 tv market in the u.s. of course it didn't help that the vet was a dump and had morons in the front office (lee thomas was just as bad as ed wade, if not worse). once they got a new stadium and committed to acting like a big-market team, plus brought in competent leadership, the winning soon followed.
