I love Mike Zunino. He has the highest floor of any player in the draft. He'll be the team leader for whoever drafts him in less than 2 years.

I actually think the guy with the highest floor in the draft is Appel. I think if he stays the same he's a harder throwing/younger Ryan Dempster type starter.

I'm really starting to think Almora is a smokescreen and Giolito is our focus. But, we have to be extremely confident in his meds, because this pick is way too important to us to whiff on it.

I would be surprised if he's an established big leaguer in 2 years.

It took Posey less than 2 years and Zunino will have the benefit of signing earlier and he'll get half a season of pro ball under his belt in his draft year. Zuinino doesn't have the hit tool Posey does but he has every bit the power (probably a tick higher), defense and intagibles of Posey. He's going to be a heck of a player for a long time.

The earlier signing date is not something we've talked about much. It'll be really interesting to see how players are handled. My guess is pitchers are really babied, tightfully so, but position players step right in immediately. Some may get in close to half a season or so, if they sign early, so that'll be fun.

Heres the thing...Posey > Zunino

I just feel like people are ignoring the fact that the college bats this year are AWFUL, especially compared to last year, which is leading to Zunino being over valued.

With our group that's picking, I'll be OK with any of Appel, Gausman, Zimmer, Zunino, Buxton, Correa, Almora, Giolito, or Fried. Hell, I'd probably make myself happy with Stroman, Wacha, or Schaffer, although I don't see it happening. I guess that I'm saying I trust our guys judgment basically. I don't see some off the wall type at least.

He might but the huge difference is Zunino plays a premier defensive position and he's going to stay at that position. Shaffer has an outside shot at being a corner outfielder but odds are he ends up at first which really hurts his overall value.

I wont be the least bit surprised if Shaffer ends up a better offensive player than Zunino.

Maybe not defensively, but offensively I wouldn't be surprised at all.

There's talk about Zunino being overrated due to the college bat class, but I think Shaffer has been the largest benefactor of that. Not that he's a bad prospect or anything...Just not the type of guy who is usually a top 2 college bat.

Zunino just isn't the guy I want at 6.

Not saying he's a bad player or anything crazy like that, I just want a huge upside type of talent at 6.

I just don't see that in Zunino as much as others

Agreed there. I want big, big upside.

Theo himself has said that the farm lacks impact/super star caliber players. Zunino is as safe a pick as you're going to find and getting an above average catcher has a ton of value, but I don't think that's going to be the target based on Theo's comment. I strongly believe it's going to be Giolito if the throwing sessions look decent.

We'll either go high risk at 6 or maybe with both supp picks. If we go high risk at 6, I would expect safer supp picks to even things out a bit.

I'm really starting to buy this. I'll bet he's third behind Buxton and Gausman on our big board by the time the draft arrives.

Giolito's price tag comes in to play possibly. If the 5 mill rumor is true, is he worth it? Not a monetary question either. Is he worth us having to underslot about 1.4 mill off the rest of our picks for? I want him as much as anyone here, but we're not in a position to have to take lesser guys with both supplemental picks and possibly another top 5 rounder as well. I'd much rather take anyone else out of the big 3 college pitchers, Zunino, Fried, or the 3 HS hitters and have the money for other guys as well. I guess it's possible we could take Giolito, hope he signs, but if not, we get the 7th pick next year in a stronger draft class. But with as bad as our season has gone and with Theo saying how much we're focusing on the draft, I think it'd really leave a sour taste in most fans mouths.

I don't think there would be much outrage if we drafted Giolito and he didn't sign. Getting two top ten picks next draft, and missing out on a first rounder in a weak class isn't really the end of the world.

Pretty much....Arizona killed it with their two picks last year...I wouldn't even lose too much sleep over not being able to sign the highly touted but already injured HS arm, stem cells or not dammit.

I hope that if they do take Giolito they go upside with the first few picks that way not signing him really wouldn't be such a big deal even for this individual draft.

I'm sure the average fan would be pissed off, but I'd be absolutely thrilled to potentially have the #1 and #7 in next year's much stronger draft. If Giolito signed great, if he didn't that's completely fine too.

Agreed, Zunino is not as good or Posey or Wieters.

Despite the quick turnaround on signing, Zunino will start at high-A next year and make it to AA before 2013 is over. That puts him on track to maybe break the bigs around draft day.
