I want to go see some college baseball this year. Any decent prospects in the big 12? I know OSU has a decent starter.

Same question for me but in the tri-state area. Rutgers specifically...Princeton too.

I'm thinking of taking a trip up to Cape Cod this year, but there's 2-3 weddings this summer to inconvenience the [expletive] out of me.

Lucas Giolito hit 100 MPH on a cold night (for Southern California, with temps near freezing when he was pitching). He was hitting 97 in the 6th.

LHP Andrew Heaney is that starter.

I know Oklahoma's closer can hit 101 and is very entertaining to watch.

Duke's Marcus Stroman, who is listed at 5'9", just struck out 17 in 7 innings. He walked none and gave up just 2 hits. His last fastball of the day was at 94 MPH.

Cue Lincecum/Oswalt/Bauer comparisons.

BA story on Stroman: http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/2012/03/dukes-marcus-stroman-fans-17/

For Stanford, Mark Appel struggled on Friday (11 Ks in a complete game but he gave up 7 runs against Fresno St) while Brett Mooneyham continues his early season brilliance on Saturday (13 Ks in 7!) and has probably played his way into the 1st round. BA piece on the red flags with Appel: http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/2012/03/mark-appel-cause-for-concern/

Zunino had 2 doubles and a HR against Miami on Friday night.

Looking at 2013, Ryne Stanek killed it for Arkansas and with Karsten Whitson injured/struggling this year, Stanek is starting to look like the leading candidate for the #1 pick next year. Stanek just missed being a draft-eligible sophomore this year by about 5 days and I bet he would have pushed Appel and Giolito for the #1 pick this year if he was eligible.

Whoa Stanek does look nasty.

CR do you think Appel might fall to 6?

Well, it's too early to be sure.Just last year, Rendon was the consensus #1 pick at this time and he had a lot more going for him as a potential 1.1 pick. On the flip side, Appel was great his first 2 weeks and this outing could be a blip. The thing is, he has yet to put everything together and have a sustained run that matches his stuff. At least he is finally racking up the Ks.

Brett heard that Hoyer was at one of Zimmer's recent games.

That's who I forgot to update. Zimmer's velocity was back at week 1 levels - 94-96 and topped out at 98.

John Sickels and Matt Garrioch mock draft: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/3/5/2844620/2012-baseball-mock-draft

The Cubs get Max Fried at 6. Lucas Giolito goes #1.

Lots of appealing options here, but which way will Theo Epstein/Jed Hoyer/Tim Wilken go? Most of the scouting front office was retained, so a drastic change in philosophy may not be forthcoming. High-upside pitching is a system need, the Cubs are short of lefty prospects, and prep southpaw Max Fried offers a great combination of projectability, present stuff, and command. There are some scouts who actually like Fried more than Giolito as a long-term prospect. Max Fried, LHP, California HS.

Is it wrong that Mark Pawelek has scared me off of highly rated prep LHPs?

Granted, the pickings have been really slim since then (Madison Bumgarner turned out well and Tyler Matzek seems to be on his way), but I'm just really leery of Fried.

FYI, Fried had a really bad outing over the weekend (something like 6 ER in 3+ IP). Up until then, Lucas Giolito and Fried hadn't given up a run this season.

I'm starting to hone in on Carlos Correa, who I think could be a realistic selection for the Cubs in that scenario. He's young, already pretty good at SS (although he may have to move off if he keeps growing), and could be a legitimate power threat if he develops as hoped.

Granted, the Cubs already are stocked at SS, but why pass up on one of the highest upside players in the draft because of that?

Gausman went 1 with Giolito going 2.

Man they better stfu about Gausman...he's the player I want the Cubs to draft but it seems he might not make it.

Think I might prefer Virant to Fried. Almost get the feeling Fried is the Everts to Giolito's Kazmir. Even comes with the curveball...

Lucas Giolito topped out at 99 last night but gave up 2 runs in 6.1 w/ poor control and lost a showdown against one of the top junior pitching prospects in LA.

This morning, Giolito was diagnosed with a sprained UCL. Out 6-10 weeks, no surgery needed. His HS career is over.

Oh boy, Giolito OUT for the season. Sprained UCL, 6 to 10 week recovery time. Elbow issues would certainly drop him down in the draft, maybe to the point he actually enrolls at UCLA. Because he's a top 5 guy almost definitely, if he's healthy. Roll the dice at 6? I would, but Theo has to make this pick count and I could see him wanting a little less risk involved.

If he's out 10 weeks, he can still throw side sessions for a few weeks before the draft. It's a UCL injury that doesn't need surgery.

On the flip side, with the new CBA, if he falls out of the first due to injury, I can't imagine he won't sign. I'm not getting my hopes up that the Cubs will pick him or that he ends up in Westwood.

Tom Gordon is the most common comp he gets.

Appel - 9 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 14 K against a very good Rice team. He was hitting 96 in the 9th inning.

Gausman - 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 K

Zunino hit 2 home runs today, giving him 7 on the season. He has as many strikeouts on the seasons as home runs.

Keith Law saw Zimmer pitch today and should have a report on him on ESPN Insider tomorrow for those of you that have ESPN Insider.

Not a good scouting report for Chris Beck last night:

Baseball America[/url]"]With about 15 scouts on hand, including several crosscheckers and a pair of scouting directors, Beck sat at 90-91 mph for the first few innings, touching 93 once (his first pitch of the game). Later in the game, his fastball dropped to the 88-90 mph range. The pitch didn't haven much movement, either—occasionally he got a little run and sink, but overall it was pretty true. Beck mostly pitched away from hitters and one scout said he gets under his pitches, which leads to the fastball being straight and the inconsistency with Beck's 83-85 mph slider. Beck's best pitch of the night was his 80-81 mph changeup that showed good fade.

My 6 guys right now would be Appel, Gausman, Zimmer, Zunino, Buxton, and Giolito. Even if he has to have TJS next season, I think his talent is worth keeping him on our list this high. Gausman and Appel are at the top for me right now, with Zunino right behind.

He was overrated to start with IMO. Top 10 talk and all...Always sounded like a watered down Cashner type to me.
