What are the chances the Cubs sign another big bonus guy?

I can't imagine they'll get anyone more from Latin America who would require a bonus over $500,000 but I'd expect a few lower 6-figure bonus guys. Might see some more expensive action in Taiwan or South Korea.

Fantastic. Nice to Malava confirmed, a great-throwing catcher with serious power from both sides is fun. (Obviously throwing and power works only if you can also catch and hit, but fun to imagine how useful that could be if he can do both...)

And fun to add another guy who projects as a possible true hitter, a guy who projects to possibly hit and hit with power.

Between the draft and the Latin picks, there's a volume of new names who have a chance to develop into middle-of-the-order bats. With Castro and with the focus on CF types, the ability to be a little more corner-willing is refreshing.

Thanks for posting that scouting report on Marcano, Raisin. Sounds like another interesting bat.

@BenBadler: LA players in our expected Top 20 $ w/ no confirmed deal: V. Sanchez, R. Osuna, He. Martinez, Mondesi (15), R. Flores, F. Reyes, Y. Mendez

Also:

@jorgeebro: Cuban Player Yoenis Cespedes could be in Nicaragua, according to some reports.

Yoenis Cespedes sounds like a legit major leaguer. Would love to see us sign this guy.

This guy is the one who broke the Malave signing and he has a decent writeup in a bunch of pitchers that have yet to be signed at the bottom of his page. It'd be great if we could find a way to snag one or two somehow....... :D

This guy sounds interesting:

From the Dominican; Manuel "Mazeta" (The Hammer) Gonzalez 6-4 205 (has the pro type pitcher's build) was the top pitching International pitching prospect coming into this year, but his velocity has been inconsistent, has touched 93-94 from 3/4 arm slott angle, has shown a feell for a curveball, but his change up needs some sink. reportly his handlers are going to take his time and not rush in having Gonzlaez sign a profesional contract.

Anyone know anything about Mayke Reyes? He's a 24 year old Cuban OF who is performing pretty well in the DSL:

38 Games (112 AB) .313/.469/.491/.960 with 25 BB and 18 K

I can't find any info regarding his past performance in Cuba. Where does he end up?

I'm pretty sure the Taiwan market is a bit thin for this year, at least, relative to what's left in the prep ranks (an arm or two in the Japanese leagues could perhaps command some decent bonuses). A couple kids left (Pirates signed some), maybe a couple low 6 figure guys.

Not sure about the South Korean market, though.

Anyone who's 24 in the DSL isn't much of a prospect in my opinion.

How soon until the new Dominican prospects get to the DSL?

Probably not till next year. And the ones who got over a mil might skip the DSL like Larry Suarez did - I hope not unless they truly warrant the aggressive promotion; Suarez clearly wasn't ready for the AZL his first year.

At what point does Jeimer Candelario get promoted?

I think he could handle AZL

You rarely see midseason promotions for first year DSL players. I think that's partly because teams don't want to push young players too much in their first pro season (especially considering they'd also end up in a foreign country midseason) and also because of visa crunches.

I do agree that I think he can handle the AZL. In fact, I expect he'll be too advanced for Mesa next season and will skip the AZL.

I don't think Candelario will have any visa issues; he was born in New York City.

I've got to think that Candelario and perhaps Penalver might be brought into the country for instructs.

Daniel Sanchez has been quite disappointing.

LA Sports Management announced today that one of their clients had signed with the Cubs and congratulated them in Cuban. One of the PSD guys asked them who it was and they said they would announce it on August 8th if it hadn't been broken by someone before then. No clue who it could be, but I guess it could be that Garcia Speck guy we had been rumored with during the draft......

Cubans don't speak Spanish? Do Chicagoans speak Illinois? I guess we will have to wait until August 8th. I hope the announcement will be in American.

Yoanner Negrin was signed this week by the Cubs, according to BA. He defected with Cabezas evidently and is a RHP. Nothing else on him. No idea if this is who is being congratulated or not from LA Sports Management.

Arizona Phil[/url]"]The Cubs have signed yet another Cuban defector, RHP Yoannis Negrin (listed erroneously as Yoanner Negrin in Baseball America).

Negrin pitched for Matanzas in the Serie Nacional de Beisbol (the Cuban major leagues), and was a rotation starter prior to defecting with fellow Cub minor leaguer (and current Boise catcher) Yaniel Cabezas last year.

The Cubs have now signed eight Cuban defectors (RHP Juan Yasser Serrano, OF Rubi Silva, C Yaniel Cabezas, INF Rafael Valdes, OF Mayke Reyes, OF Eliecer Bonne, LHP Frank del Valle, and now RHP Yoannis Negrin) since the start of the 2010 season.

Can anyone tell me when we normally make our Pac-Rim signings?

Throughout the course of the year. Hak-Ju Lee and Jin-Young Kim were signed very early (winter/spring), Dae-Eun Rhee signed in the middle of the summer and Su-Min Jung and Jae-Hoon Ha signed late summer but that news didn't come out till the fall.

Wei-Chung Wang (Yao-Lin's younger brother) failed his physical and had his contract voided by the Pirates. He needs TJS.

I read that Negrin was his staff ace back in cuba and won 11 games in their short season but havent looked up his stats yet. I will post them when I do. But on the surface he sounds like a good get.

Here are the only stats I could find on Negrin:

In the 48th Cuban season, Yoannis Negrin (Matanzas) finished tenth in Saves with 7

and his ERA was 4.91 in 36.2 innings. In three previous seasons, Negrin had an ERA of

4.23 in 289.2 innings.

That comes from an interview with his advisor/agent. It also says that his fastball is consistently at 90, peaking at 94 and he throws a two-seamer, four-seamer, slider, curve, and change.

The entire interview can be found here (Its in pdf form, but I'm linking google's html cache of the document):

There is also a little bit about Cabezas in that interview.
