Its easy to sit and wait for him to crash down to earth, which could happen, but maybe...just maybe our 3 million dollar hitting guru has had something to do with it. Its not like hes putting up some monsterous, unsustainable numbers here. Hes been a very pleasant surprise. In the minors, he always hit for decent average, not a ton of walks and not much slugging. The difference is, hes added some extra base hits here and there. I wouldnt be surprised at all if he settled in to similar to his minor league line of .286/.334/.374/.708, maybe a touch higher on the slugging.

If we're talking about Barney adding power, I would be more inclined to credit Camp Colvin. Barney added close to 20 pounds over the offseason and that might have helped him add just a touch more power. I also think he could settle in close to his minor league line. Barney's the type of player who wouldn't lose much facing better pitchers.

I am surprised to see that Barney is not getting more praise here. But I guess that I am biased. Darwin is from Portland, Or., which is where I live. His success with the Cubs and being a leader on two National Championship teams (Oregon State) means that the local paper is giving him a lot of coverage.

I hope he continues to surprise people. From everything I have seen, he seems to be a class act.

Thats because so many people on these boards are busy eating the Darwin Barney crow. lol

There was a tremendous amount of complaining about how he had never hit in the minors and how he'd never be a productive bat in the majors. Guess its still early but I like what Ive seen from the guy so far.

The good news: His K% is down and his Iso is up.

The bad news: His BB% is down, and while his .340 BABIP isn't unsustainable with the right skillset, I'm not ready to buy on Barney having enough speed to support it... let alone keep up his current 25.0% LD rate.

Still, it's an encouraging first month. But he's got a long way to go before anybody has to worry about eating crow.

Pfff. You would have a lot more time to worry about eating crow if you weren't so busy eating the crow.

I seem to recall having a very vocal "who cares?" stance on our 2B situation just before the season began... at least as far as it pertains towards Barney/Baker/DeWitt. I did want to acquire a better option from outside the org if at all possible.
