Unless the Cubs had an all-star-caliber player locking down 1B it's ridiculous to paint the want for Fielder or Pujols as "desperation." Desperation is drowning someone like Soriano in money to play for the Cubs. Signing 28-year-old Prince Fielder or the greatest hitter ever to huge contracts isn't.

Bottom line, listing the Cubs with the Dodgers and Mets as if they're in comparable financial situations is asinine. The Cubs have to produce a better team and have the means to do so. The Dodgers and Mets don't have any money.

Desperation is exactly what brought Soriano here. They absolutely had to have an impact OF and the only way this team stood a chance of getting one was via free agency. They found the best one and grossly overpaid to get him. But you are absolutely right, there is no desperation in trying to acquire the best player possible at a position of need, unless you call what every big market contender does every year desperation. But if that is the case, desperation is perfectly healthy and an indication of a quality organization.

I wouldnt use the term desperation, but we need an overhaul. The payroll is one of the highest. The big league team is one of the worst, and the farm system is in the middle of the pack. The team is a mess, but a mess that can be fixed.

Yes, the baseball team is bad. The organization is healthy.

"The only thing that keeps this organization from being recognized as one of the finest in baseball is wins and losses at the major league level."
