So what's the likelihood Jackson gets sent up to AAA in the next 2 months?

I'd have to think it's pretty likely, particularly if Colvin continues to struggle

Anybody have any insight on Kurcz and why he's starting this year? Are they just putting him through the Maestri treatment and giving him extra innings to develop secondary pitches? Or are they trying to convert him to a starter?

I suspect both, but I'd suspect more the former than the latter.

My guess is that 19 short-season innings at age 19 isn't enough to tell what a guy will be or could be. So if you don't know the future for a kid, it makes sense to start him and see how it goes.

But I think it will be more surprise than expectation if he ends up with the diverse arsenal, pitch-count efficiency, and the durability needed for a rotation pitcher. So probably he'll end up in relief. But it doesn't hurt to take a look at how he'd do in rotation.

Pretty high, I would have to imagine. Jackson may even press for a job on the big league squad in time to make Byrd available at the deadline.

That would be LOVELY.

There's really zero need for Jackson to be up before September, unless he spends a couple months at Iowa OPSing 1.000 with a 10% K rate or something. He'll be 22 most of this year and hasn't played above AA. Let him earn a promotion and then finish the MiLB season at Iowa where he can see all the junkballers that will test his plate discipline.

I think it's probably a given that he'll be up in September and, barring some sort of collapse, should probably be up for good at that point. So really, September versus June/July/August really doesn't make a difference. It doesn't impact super 2 status, and unless we call him up in the next couple weeks he wont get enough service time to qualify for FA sooner.

If he earns a promotion, I don't see any reason not to give it to him.

Our OF is overcrowded to begin with, so you're talking about trading one of our OFs in the next 3 months to make room for him. Colvin and Soriano I really doubt are getting dealt, and Byrd makes a lot more sense in the offseason. I'd like to see Jackson sooner rather than later, but I don't really see the benefit to doing so earlier than September, unless he's completely terrorizing AAA for 200+ PA's.

historically Hendry has refused to "sell" until it's crystal clear we won't have a chance in hell of competing, which shouldn't (i hope) be the case by July 31st

i'd bet against Byrd being traded before the offseason

I think we can both agree the Cubs will be trying to move Fukudome regardless.

If Colvin isn't performing well, it may make sense to slide Byrd to RF and get Jackson up to the bigs to see what we've got. If Colvin is performing well, I really don't see how holding onto Byrd until the offseason makes it more likely we'll get a good deal for him. We may have to settle for guys who are further away, but the general quality of the package is going to be about the same.

Isn't this the last year of Fukudome's contract? I don't understand your point about trying to move him. Are you referring to the July tade deadline?

Chris Archer is scheduled to face the Smokies in this one. Should be fun to watch.

Chalk one up for the Cubs.

Archer threw 76 pitches in 4.2 IP and gave up 5 hits, 3 earned while walking 3 and striking out 5.

His counterpart, Rafael Dolis, has thrown 85 pitches over 6 IP and has given up 4 hits, 1 earned while striking out 5 and walking none.

Vitters has doubled and walked.

So far so good with Josh. 3 walks on the year to go along with 3 doubles and a HR.

Brett Jackson got ejected in the 5th inning tonight, but not before extending his hitting streak. He has hit safely in every game so far this season.
