I believe Simpson only went 3.1 IP last time. Is he on a pitch count/inning cap or are they just stretching him out?

Well, all Cub minor leaguer starters are on pitch counts. I don't know whether his pitch count might be lower than other starters or not but it's not surprising that he didn't make it through 4 since he struck out 7.

Also, Simpson threw 3.2 last time out.

At first, I thought his start got cut short due to a rain delay. There was a 56 minute delay in that game. But the opposing pitcher went 6 IP, then I didn't know what to think. At least we know he's not hurt. Speaking of which, has anyone gotten confirmation that McNutt only had a blister?

Just a blister on McNutt, will probably miss 1 start

That is entirely possible regarding the rain delay. I was not aware they had had one.

Rain delay had nothing to do with it. The delay was a suspension after 8 innings with the game resumed the next day. All our starters are on 70-75 pitches the first few times around and Hayden threw 67 pitches in 3.2 innings on Thursday with 43 strikes, hence the 7k. He will be in the same boat today followed again by Eric Jokisch.

Thanks for the clarification!

Also, as I've been lazy, what's the story on AJ Morris?

I don't remember what kind of arm injury he has, but it's been speculated that the Cubs traded for him knowing that it was possible he'd miss the entire 2011 season.

Morris had shoulder surgery.

Was it AZPhil that called Robert Whitenack as this year's Trey McNutt? Anyway, so far so good tonight.

Thru 4, Whitenack has one unearned, no hits, no walks, and 8 Ks. Also 5 ground ball outs to 0 fly ball outs. Nice.

Holy crap, Whitenack. Strikes out the first guy in the 6th for his 10th K of the night.

Lake is 2/2 with a double and a triple.

ETA: There goes the no-no. Gave up a 1-out triple. Then works around it with 2 more Ks. What I imagine is his final line: 6 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 12 K, 6-1 GO-FO.

Whitenack did give up his first hit though. 12 K's thru 6

Simpson getting hit pretty badly.

that cuban guy is starting out pretty well at peoria.

i guess if there's any positive about simpson's start it is that he has been singled to death - only 1 triple and then 7 singles. so it's not like he's giving up home runs and rockets into the gaps.

Yep, not pretty. On the bright side, Whitenack has pitched 11 innings, given up 6 hits, 2 earned, 0 walks and 15 strikeouts on the season so far with a fantastic GO/AO ratio.

Burgess throws lefthanded, by the way, making it damn near impossible for him to play any IF position other than 1B.

He also was cruising until he got to 3.2 IP, which was how far he went last time out. Probably took fewer pitches this time, but fatigue may have been a part of his struggles.

Brett Jackson with a double and Vitters with a homer in the rain shortened game.

Jackson needs a better nickname than B-Jax. How about "Jackson 5-Tool"?

You said "better" not "a whole hell-of-a-lot worse."

Am I missing something? Tennessee didn't play on Tuesday.

That's what happened on Monday's game, he probably found his way to that game since the whole league was off yesterday.
