Where's this coming from? Heard nothing about Wells anywhere.

Beat writers on Twitter. Wittenmeyer specifically has posted this and was just mentioned on The Score as well. Hendry just had a news conference. Edited by 98navigator

On a fortunate note, the Cubs have off-days each of the next 3 weeks. On the down side, each comes after 6-game blocks, so they'd need either 5 starters anyway, or one of Demp-Z-Garza would have to go on short rest twice.

Hm, that Cashner news is pretty good, isn't it?

Well so much for the Cubs biggest advantage over their rivals (the back end of the rotation being so good). I think I've counted that the 5th starter would only have to pitch twice in the next 20 days or so and Coleman maybe only 3 times? if they want to continue to move the other 3 to pitch on as much normal rest as possible every start.

For the time being. Hope it doesn't end up being something worse once he comes back, but for now it sounds much better than most of the alternatives.

With the already scheduled off days and the potential for a few rain outs, they might be able to skip the #5 enough to limit the damage. Hopefully one of these guys will be back by then.

Heres Roto and there take on it

Andrew Cashner will go on the disabled list with a mild strain in the back of his rotator cuff.

Cashner gave the Cubs a pretty good scare when he was forced to leave his first major league start Tuesday with right shoulder tightness. They'll obviously take every precaution here, though there's no current timetable for his return. The Cubs plan to call up Casey Coleman to take his spot in the starting rotation.

Randy Wells will go on the disabled list with a forearm strain.

Just what the Cubs need. Wells tossed six innings of one-run ball in Monday's win over the Diamondbacks, so this certainly comes out of nowhere. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry stressed that the injury was to his forearm, not his elbow, but we're awaiting further about the severity. Casey Coleman is expected to fill one of the vacant rotation spots, but they

I guess maybe Thomas Diamond for the 5th spot or maybe they ask Looper to unretire? If Silva hadn't thrown that tantrum when he was cut he would have a major league job again but that rules him out.

I'm a huge fan of caution in this situation, early in the year without much in the way of grandiose expectations. Not saying they might as well just forfeit the season, but there's no reason to risk serious injury for the young talent at this point.

What was the pitching order in Iowa? Can they get each of these guys a start before calling them up?
